I finished settling in not long after we brought my luggage inside. I unpacked everything I needed,

took a shower, and changed into fresh clothes before finally sitting down for a moment,

There was a knock on the door, and I looked toward it.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and Sage walked inside.

“Food has been prepared for you, and it has already been served,” she said as she leaned against

the drawer.

I looked at her and shook my head.

“If I eat now, Mom is going to be upset.”

Sage raised an eyebrow.

“Why would she be upset?”

I

I sat down, crossing my legs. “You know how Mom is. When I go to see her, she’ll want to run

around and cook something too, and if I tell her I’ve already eaten, she’ll be offended.”

Sage laughed softly.

“You’re right. Rejecting Mom’s food is always a crime. But I was actually thinking you could eat

something now and maybe take a short nap before you go to their quarters.”

I shook my head.

“I’m fine. I’d rather go and see them now.”

Sage studied me for a moment before eventually shrugging.

“Fine.”

I made my way to the quarters Sage had told me my parents were now staying in. The main door

was already open, so I didn’t bother knocking.

I stepped inside while carrying the bag containing the gifts I had brought for them and looked around the space.

“Father?” I called as I walked into the sitting room.

There was no response, so I called again.

“Mom?”

A moment later, my mother walked into the sitting room.

“Sage? What is the matter?” she said, probably mistaking my voice for Sage’s.

She stopped as soon as her eyes settled on me.

For a moment, she simply stood there, staring at me as though she couldn’t quite believe what she

was seeing. The surprise on her face was so obvious that I couldn’t help laughing.

“It’s me.”

She still didn’t move. I smiled and walked toward her.

“Mom.”

That finally seemed to bring her out of her shock. I opened my arms and hugged her, and I felt her

body slowly relax against me. A moment later, she smiled and held me properly.

“Faye… How are you here?” she asked. “When did you arrive?”

“I arrived not long ago.”

I smiled as I pulled back slightly. I realized then that she had probably thought I wasn’t actually

coming home when I said I would. That would explain why she looked so shocked to see me

standing in front of her.

She hugged me again, this time more genuinely, and I smiled as I held her.

I was about to ask about my father when I heard the door open behind me.

My father walked into the quarters from outside, and his eyes immediately found me.

“There you are!”

He crossed the room quickly and pulled me into a hug before I could even say anything. I laughed as I hugged him back.

Apparently, he had seen me arrive earlier. According to him, he had been outside having a

discussion with some elders when they noticed my car arriving and wondered who had come into

the house. He had seen me get out of the car, but he hadn’t been able to leave the discussion

immediately.

“When I finished speaking with them, I went back to the main house to ask Sage if you were with

her,” he explained. “She told me you had already come here to see us, so I hurried back.”

I laughed softly.

“I didn’t know you saw me arrive. I would have waited for you,” I said.

At that moment, I realized just how much I had missed this. I had missed my parents, and I had

missed being here with them.

Eventually, we all sat down, and my mother immediately announced that she was going into the kitchen to prepare something for me.

“You don’t have to,” I protested, even though I knew there was no point.

“Nonsense. You’ve just come home, and you think I won’t cook for you?” my mother said. Before could argue further, she had already walked away.

My father watched her go with an amused smile before turning back to me.
