Chapter 652-1
HELEN
She remained seated for several moments after explaining how she had known I was dying.
I didn’t know what to say to her. There were too many things I wanted to ask, and yet none of them seemed important enough to come before the one question that was still sitting heavily between us.
How much did she know?
I watched her carefully as she studied me. She seemed different from the woman I remembered, or perhaps she had simply grown older while I had spent decades convincing myself that I no longer knew her. There was still something familiar in her face, though. Something that reminded me of the woman who had once been my mother before I walked away from everything connected to her.
Seraphine finally looked down at my hands.
“Give me your hand.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“Your hand, Helen.”
There was no room for argument in her tone.
I hesitated before extending my right hand toward her. She took it gently and turned my palm upward. Her fingers moved slowly across the lines of my palm, and at first, her expression remained unreadable.
Then it changed.
Her eyes narrowed.
I knew that look. She had found something.
“What?”
She didn’t answer. Instead, she traced one of the lines again, this time with more concentration. Her thumb paused near the center of my palm, and a faint warmth spread through my hand.
I watched her face as she closed her eyes.

For a moment, the room became completely silent.
Then her fingers tightened around mine.
“You used it,” she said.

I didn’t need to ask what she meant. Seraphine opened her eyes and looked directly at me.
“You used forbidden magic.”
I slowly pulled my hand away.
“The dark magic,” she said.
Her voice was quieter now, but there was something far more dangerous beneath it.
“You actually used it,” she said.
I looked away. There was no point denying it. She already knew.
Seraphine stood slowly, her eyes never leaving me.
“I don’t understand you, Helen.”
I remained silent.
“You spent years running from this. You wanted nothing to do with it. You wanted nothing to do with our bloodline, our practices, or our knowledge. Any of it.”
She shook her head in disbelief.
“And now, after all those years, you put your hands into the very thing you spent your entire life trying to escape.”
“I didn’t have a choice,” I said.
“You always have a choice.”
“Not that time,” I said.
She stared at me.
“You used magic this deep without your ancestral protection… What were you thinking?” my mother asked.
I said nothing.
She began to pace slowly across the room.

“Do you even understand what you did?”
“I understood enough,” I said.
“No, you didn’t.”
She turned toward me.

“If you had understood, you would never have attempted it alone.” She was referring to the kind of magic I used to bring Faye back to life.
I remained silent.
“I knew there would be consequences. It wasn’t a mistake,” I said.
“Consequences?”
A bitter laugh escaped her.
“Helen, this isn’t a spell that leaves you exhausted for a few days. This isn’t a simple curse you can remove with herbs or cleansing rituals. You reached into something that was never meant to be touched without protection.”
“I know,” I said.
“Then why?”
The question came out almost painfully.
“Why would you take that kind of risk?”
