Kaylee:
I waited anxiously in the car.
A little while later, Baxter finally arrived, and the car door opened.
A red blindfold covered my eyes.
If my wolf had been awake, she would have been so happy. We had finally gone on a trip, and he had told me this island was one of the humans’ favorites.
Unfortunately, my wolf was still sleeping because of wolfsbane but even without relying on her senses, I focused on the scent around me.
It smelled amazing.
Baxter opened the door on my side and took my hand in his.
“Are we there yet?” I asked, giggling.
“Yes, my love. We’ll mark and accept each other here,” he said, helping me out of the car.
“I can’t wait for that,” I laughed.
He slammed the door shut and started leading me forward.
However, I noticed that he seemed a little stiff.
To be honest, I had expected him to pick me up in his arms, but he didn’t.
Still, I thought maybe he was saving most of the intimacy for later, for the marking.
Just thinking about going home and telling Madeline that we hadn’t gone away for some task, but to get married, made me even more excited. Her face would be worth seeing.
Defeat always looked so beautiful on her.
“You know, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been today,” I told Baxter.
“Me too. I’m really happy today,” Baxter replied just as cheerfully.
Then, suddenly, the scents of different kinds of roses washed over me.
“They’re here, my love,” he commented, turning me and placing both hands on my arms to position me in a particular direction.
“Now don’t turn around or look behind you, okay? There’s another surprise behind you,” he said, and I nodded immediately.
I could hear noises coming from behind me, but I had no idea what they were.
“I’m getting a little anxious here,” I told him.
I could hear groaning and moaning behind me, and the sounds immediately made me uneasy.
“I’m right here with you, so why are you anxious?”
Baxter slowly lowered his hands along my arms before taking both of my hands in his.
“You know, Kaylee, I brought you all the way out here for a very special reason.”
As he started to speak, I tried to block out the strange noises coming from behind me.
I had no idea where he had brought me.
He had told me that he would propose in front of a large crowd, that we would exchange rings, and then go somewhere private afterward for the marking.
However, it did not feel like there were many people here.
All I could hear behind me were sounds that reminded me of an injured animal.
“Do you remember the last time we met?”
The moment he asked that, I bit the inside of my cheek.
I hoped he was only trying to jog my memory, because the last time we had met, there had been nothing romantic between us.
“Yes, I remember. We saw each other at the park, right?” I lied. “You broke my heart that day.”
"Really? Oh, I was such a terrible person."
Baxter sounded so cute. I bet he was pouting.
“Can I take off my blindfold and see where I am?” I asked anxiously, wanting to feel more involved in our engagement.
“Okay, but promise me you won’t turn around. There’s a gift for you back there.”
The moment he said that, I realized he must have brought me some kind of animal, probably a pet.
Part of me thought that instead of a dog or cat, he could have given me a car or even a plane.
But then again, once I became the president’s wife, I would get things like that anyway.
He stepped closer and removed my blindfold.
At first, my vision was slightly blurred.
