He had devastated her back then.
That was the first knife to her heart.
Later, when Madeline learned there was a cure and wanted Silas to take her, Lucius had used his status as her husband to forcibly block her hospital transfer. He had stolen her custody away from Silas, only to abandon her and run off to Liliana instead of properly caring for her.
That was the second knife.
The deepest wound, of course, was the final one. To steal Madeline's lead surgeon, he had resorted to every despicable tactic. He had lied and weaponized his wealth, while Madeline was paralyzed and utterly defenseless.
Whenever he couldn't find Madeline, Lucius would agonizingly replay these events in his mind.
He knew perfectly well now that she was completely brokenhearted.
However, Lucius rationalized that since Madeline hadn't given Silas a chance, it meant she hadn't truly given up on him. He comforted himself with the thought that she just needed more time to forgive him.
That was why she was intentionally ignoring him. Her wounds were still fresh.
Lucius drew a sharp breath.
He didn't know why, but whenever he met Madeline's cold gaze, a suffocating weight crushed his chest.
Madeline stood on the stage.
The ceremony concluded.
As she stepped down and walked past the audience seating, she glanced down just as another woman looked up.
Their eyes met. Madeline mentally cursed her rotten luck.
She had run into Liliana again.
