Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 102

He was doing this to help mend their relationship. Hazel had always misunderstood Evelyn, and he hoped this would give them a chance to sit down and talk things out calmly. After all, Hazel wasn't entirely an unreasonable person.

Evelyn smiled sweetly. "I will, Julian. I'll head inside first."

She hugged the lunchbox and walked into the lobby, her smile fading into a chilly sneer the second she saw Hazel's back.

They were the only two in the elevator. Evelyn stood behind Hazel, a mocking curl on her lips.

Just as Hazel sat at her desk and booted up her computer, Evelyn walked past her. She placed the thermal lunchbox heavily onto her own desk, making a deliberate thud. Sitting down, she let out an exaggerated sigh, lacing her tone with helplessness.

"I told him he didn't have to, but Julian insisted on cooking for me. I heard he woke up extra early just to do it."

She turned her head, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Hazel, has Julian ever made breakfast for you?"

Hazel turned to her slowly, her gaze as dead and calm as a stagnant pool.

She glanced at the thermal container and suddenly let out an amused laugh.

"You mean that thing you've been clutching? So those leftovers were actually for you. I thought we were just supposed to toss the scraps in the trash."

Evelyn's face drained of color.

She stared down at the lunchbox. What? Leftovers? How could Julian possibly feed her leftovers? Hazel had to be lying out of sheer jealousy.

She took a deep breath, composing herself, and offered a look of manufactured pity.

Audrey ground her teeth in frustration, her face turning stormy. "Hazel is so obnoxious. Even if you did hate her, it would be totally justified. She stole the invitations that rightfully belonged to us, and now she struts around looking down on everyone. What is she so damn arrogant about?"

Evelyn hesitated, looking as if she wanted to speak but couldn't.

Catching the hesitation, Audrey frowned. "Evelyn, if you have something to say, just say it."

Evelyn lowered her head, playing the role of a reluctant victim. "I originally didn't want to bring this up, but at this point, I don't want to hide it anymore. Audrey, you're right. I do dislike Hazel, but it's not because of her competence. I know I'm just as capable as she is."

She paused, biting her lip to look perfectly pitiful.

Audrey's frown deepened sharply. "Then because of what?"
