She paused deliberately, leaving the sentence unfinished. That was enough. Julian wasn't stupid; he would connect the dots.
There was a two-second silence on the other end of the line before his voice returned. "Stay exactly where you are. I'm coming to pick you up right now."
The call ended abruptly. Evelyn stood by the road clutching her phone. A gust of night wind blew past, making her shiver violently.
She looked up and noticed a few passersby. Their eyes landed on her face, and the whispers started.
"Hey, look at that girl. Is she the one from the news?"
"I think it actually is her..."
"Oh my God, she actually showed her face outside?"
Evelyn's face flushed a deep crimson. She frantically dug into her purse, pulled out a pair of sunglasses and a face mask, and hastily shoved them on.
Keeping her head down, she didn't dare make eye contact with anyone. Her knuckles turned white as she clenched her fists in sheer humiliation.
Julian arrived quickly. The black Maybach slammed its brakes by the curb, tires screeching sharply against the pavement.
He shoved the door open and strode over. The moment Evelyn saw him, she burst into fresh tears and threw herself into his arms. Gripping his shirt collar, she shook uncontrollably.
"Julian, my life is over. That video is everywhere online... I'm too ashamed to even face the world."
Her voice grew increasingly hysterical. "If that's what you think, then pull over right now. Let me jump out. We'll cut all ties, and I won't get in the way of you and Hazel making up. Julian, I have no face left to be around you!"
As she yelled, she reached for the door handle. Julian frantically slammed on the brakes, pulling the car over. He lunged over and pulled her into a tight embrace, locking his arms around her so she couldn't move. "That's not what I meant. Evelyn, please calm down. This is much more complicated than you think. You're the victim here. Stop listening to what everyone else is saying."
Evelyn trembled violently, crying as if the sky were falling. She shrieked, "How can I not listen?! Julian, my reputation is completely destroyed. What am I supposed to do now?"
Julian's face darkened. He stared out into the dark night, his mind churning.
Listening to Evelyn's desperate sobs beside him, the seed of suspicion in his heart began to grow. Was it really Hazel?
No, Hazel wasn't that toxic. But if it wasn't Hazel, who could it be? Audrey? Audrey and Evelyn had no feud—why would she target her?
