"I naturally wouldn't believe they had such good intentions."
Hazel set down her wine glass and let out a soft laugh, a casual smile touching the corners of her lips. "I just didn't expect them to be so stupid."
Nellie frowned, biting her lip in deep thought. The excitement on her face had been replaced by worry. "Babe, if they pursue this relentlessly, they might trace it back to you. You won't be able to avoid a trip to the police station. You're tied up in this now."
Hazel picked up a grilled chicken wing and smiled. "It's fine. Don't worry about me."
She was banking on the fact that Evelyn wouldn't dare make a move. The two women couldn't extract themselves from this either. If it really went to an investigation, Audrey and Evelyn were the true instigators. In the end, they would have to settle and swallow the bitter pill in silence. Thinking of this, the corners of her mouth curled up slightly.
Seeing the look in her eyes, Nellie sighed, raised her glass, and downed it in one gulp. "Whatever happens, we celebrate tonight. That Evelyn totally had it coming."
The two of them drank wine, ate their takeout, and talked late into the night.
Nellie drank too much and fell asleep leaning against the sofa. Hazel draped a blanket over her, cleaned up the mess on the coffee table, and went to take a shower.
The hot water cascaded down, washing away her exhaustion and all the messy emotions. She dried her hair, changed into her pajamas, lay down in bed, and quickly fell asleep.
When she woke up again, it was to the ringing of her phone. The harsh glare of the screen made her squint. The caller ID showed Julian Hayes.
She checked the time. It was the early hours of the morning. After a brief hesitation, she answered it.
"What is it?" Her voice carried a hint of annoyance at being woken up.
Julian pushed the car door open, his expression terrifyingly dark. He strode over, grabbed her arm before she could speak, and forcefully shoved her into the passenger seat.
Hazel furrowed her brow fiercely. "What are you doing? Julian, we live in a lawful society."
Julian started the car and slammed on the gas, the vehicle shooting forward.
He turned to shoot her a dark look, his voice as cold as ice. "You know we live in a lawful society? Do you have any idea what price you're going to pay for your actions?"
Hazel stared at him expressionlessly before letting out a soft laugh that didn't reach her eyes. "Julian, what exactly are you trying to say?"
