Despite her heartbreak, Ivy forced herself not to dwell on it. She got out of bed, got dressed, and prepared to pick Stella up from preschool.
Her comfortable life lately had made her delusional enough to think he actually saw her as a real wife.
He didn't.
To Alaric, she was nothing more than a convenient woman hired to play nanny to his kid and satisfy his physical urges in bed.
Of course, it wasn't like she was losing out.
She received physical pleasure and a massive nest egg in return.
There was no reason to be upset.
Ivy picked up the little girl and texted her sisters that she was too busy to return to the hospital.
She also told Hazel to head straight back to campus the next day.
Lacking the emotional energy to take them shopping for gifts, she simply transferred the cash to their accounts.
That evening, Alaric still hadn't come home.
During dinner, Stella blinked her big, innocent eyes and asked with concern,
"Mommy, where's Daddy? Why isn't he eating with us? Is he mad at me?"
She was starting to regret kicking him earlier, terrified he might abandon her.
Ivy gently stroked her hair, offering soft comfort.
"He's your dad, sweetheart. He would never be mad at you. He's just super busy, so let's not bother him."
In the past, she used to text Alaric all the time, asking if he was coming home for dinner.
Whenever he replied, it fueled the illusion that they were a normal, loving couple, making her naively crave more.
His cold rejection today had finally shattered that fantasy.
This marriage had an expiration date.
She would never foolishly hope for anything again.
As long as he didn't fire her from the hospital, she didn't care if he stayed out every night for the rest of their arrangement. She would never dial his number or send another text again.
Late at night, inside an exclusive private club.
