Hailey, who stood in front of the parked carriage, shook her head before saying, "I don’t think that’s a good idea."
The idea was to break into the mansion. This was Minister Sylvan’s house! The man who had tried to break the treaty between Ruelle and Lucian, she doubted they would be able to get away from it.
"Why don’t we do it by getting inside the mansion like any regular visitors?" she asked with her hands on her hips.
"It is obvious that the mirror is in here. I doubt your mirror talk will work here, one shilling. The Sylvans are smarter than they look," Sawyer rolled his eyes. "If you are scared, why don’t you sit inside the carriage and wait while the adults go in and get the work done?"
Hailey’s lips pursed before she said, "Fine. I will sit here and guard the carriage." She wasn’t fast like them and her chances of getting caught were much higher.
"I think we will need her in there," Angelina interrupted them. "Perhaps I can keep Lady Sylvan occupied while Hailey can take care of the human."
"What human?" Hailey asked, turning to the vampiress, wondering if this was to do with a butler or a maid.
"You have met her, Mia," Angelina informed and said, "Come now. If someone there knows what the mirror does and finds it complete, things can turn difficult. Ready?" She asked her twin.
Sawyer grinned, waving his hand as the three of them got inside the carriage. He said, "I was born ready."
Soon the carriage door closed, and it headed straight to the Sylvan’s mansion. The mansion was one of the largest compared to the other three. Once the vehicle got inside, it came to a stop at the front of the entrance, where the doors were already open.
An old man stepped outside, his eyes watching them like a hawk before he welcomed them.
"Good morning, Miss Ravencroft," he said at last, offering a deep bow. When he straightened, his eyes moved to Hailey and Oliver.
"I am here to see Minister Sylvan and Lady Sylvan," Angelina informed him. Her tone matched his own which was even and composed, betraying nothing of the urgency that had driven them across five towns and a frozen river to reach this doorstep.
"Unfortunately, the minister has yet to return from the courthouse," the butler’s expression did not shift as he informed her. "However, Lady Sylvan will see you. Please, come in."
The butler stepped aside, and the heavy doors swung open wide.
Hailey stepped through the threshold and immediately forgot, for one unguarded moment, why she was there at all. The entrance hall rose above her with a ceiling that was carved in great detail. Chandeliers hung above them, their crystals glittering in dim light. She craned her neck to see more of it, tilting her head back until her balance wavered and she caught herself. But then her eyes fell on a sculpture, and she went,
"Hey, I know that one! I made it when we were in Sexton," her voice came louder than she had meant in the quiet place.
The butler, who didn’t look impressed, glanced towards the corner and said, "It will be broken down soon."
"Why? If you’re going to throw it away, you might as well return it to me. I made it," Hailey reasoned, not knowing why her work was here in the first place.
"The piece belongs to the Sylvan family," the butler pressed. "It was bought at auction for two hundred gold coins."
Two hundred... what?! Hailey looked down at her hands in astonishment. Perhaps she could make a living from it! Oliver pulled Hailey to the side and whispered, "Sexton has always sent out the artwork for auction. It helps build revenue for the place."
As they continued to walk, the butler continued, "Lady Sylvan finds it appalling. It is hard to know if it is a horse or an ox."
"It is a donkey," Hailey answered, making the butler purse his lips without uttering another word.
While Hailey and the others walked through the corridor of the Sylvan mansion, Sawyer slipped around the side of the mansion like a shadow without being noticed by the guards or the servants.
Grabbing hold of the thick ivy, he climbed upwards towards an open window. Placing his hand on the windowsill, he finally dropped inside the room, quiet as a cat. He noticed the room decorated in green before his eyes fell on a mirror there.
He pulled out a stone that he had picked up and his hand rose, ready to flick it in the direction of the mirror. But from the corner of his eye, he caught a figure standing in the room who dropped something on the ground.
