Emmy leaned into the man's embrace, listening to the ocean breeze. It felt as though their recent ordeal had already faded into the distant past, leaving her with a sudden realization that she was quite hungry. She tilted her head up and asked softly, "Do you really plan on making the major general wait indefinitely?"
At the mere mention of the major general, James's relaxed brow instantly furrowed, a flicker of obvious displeasure crossing his dark eyes. "We are enjoying the view. Why bring up someone so determined to ruin the mood?"
Emmy found his reaction rather amusing and reached out, poking the firm line of his jaw where it rested against her shoulder. "But I am a little hungry." Her voice was soft, laced with an unconscious hint of coquettishness.
The moment she mentioned being hungry, James sat up straight, his previous languid demeanor vanishing without a trace. He stood up, his large hands grasping her shoulders to gently help her to her feet. "Let us go, then. I will take you to get something to eat." He took her hand and led her toward the cruise ship's dining room.
When Nina saw them approaching, her eyes lit up, and she immediately went to greet them. She deliberately omitted the message the major general had left. The very thought of that bastard nearly getting her lady killed ignited a fiery rage within her. She was more than happy to let Calony swallow the cold wind and wait until he rotted. Unfortunately, things rarely went exactly as planned.
Barrett approached from the opposite corridor. Fine beads of sweat dotted his forehead, making it evident that he had only sought them out under immense pressure. He stopped in front of James and bowed his head slightly. "Mr. Nelson, the major general has been waiting for you for three hours. He hopes you might relocate to the conference cabin."
Hearing this, Emmy voluntarily released James's hand. "Go ahead and attend to your business. I can head to the dining room on my own."
Emmy watched her hearty appetite and could not help but smile. Not long after, her steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup arrived. Emmy picked up her spoon and had just taken her first sip of broth when the clicking of high heels halted beside their table.
Mercedes pulled out the chair opposite Emmy and sat down without the slightest bit of hesitation. She wore a tailored maxi dress, her exquisite makeup failing to conceal the deep exhaustion lingering in her eyes. She turned and waved at a nearby waiter. "I will have a bowl of chicken noodle soup as well. Exactly like hers."
After the waiter nodded and walked away, Mercedes looked at Emmy and asked, "Ms. Lincoln, is it convenient to chat?"
