Chapter 283
Third Person’s POV
A few days later, the professors who had been on academic exchange abroad returned to Shadowfang Academy. After wrapping up her remaining responsibilities, Seraphina resumed work at the healing center.
The workload there was far heavier than teaching, but at least it spared her the awkwardness of constantly running into Caldwell.
Then, without warning, full-scale conflict erupted between Ukraine and Russia.
Many of Ukraine’s civilian neighborhoods lay in ruins-roads torn apart and houses reduced to rubble.
To make matters worse, the countless civilian bodies left in the open triggered a sweeping epidemic across the region.
More and more civilians, already displaced and homeless, fell ill with all kinds of infectious diseases.
The country was plunged into unimaginable misery.
Out of humanitarian concern, the international community channeled food, medicine, and other essential supplies to Ukrainian civilians.
Medical relief teams were also being assembled to provide humanitarian aid on the ground.
Seraphina signed up.
“Sera… have you talked this over with your parents?” Dr. Bauer asked, his gaze on her application form.
He looked torn.
As head of the healing center, he wanted doctors willing to step forward without hesitation.
But as Seraphina’s mentor, he couldn’t bear the thought of her walking into harm’s way.
Instead of answering directly, Seraphina nodded with quiet conviction. “They’ll support my decision.”
“But-” Dr. Bauer began.
“Dr. Bauer, don’t worry,” Seraphina cut him off. “We’ll take all the necessary precautions. Besides, we’re werewolves. With our immunity and healing abilities, human diseases don’t stand a chance against us. And we’ll be stationed in a protected civilian zone-our safety is assured.”
Seeing that she had already made up her mind, Dr. Bauer could only sign off on her application.
When she returned to the surgical wing, Seraphina saw Wilmot walking out of Trista’s office, looking extremely upset.
When he saw Seraphina, he froze; a trace of sadness flickered across his face.
After a moment’s hesitation, he walked over. “You signed up for the relief mission to Ukraine too?”
Seraphina didn’t answer. She looked at him, puzzled.
“Does Mortimer know?” Wilmot continued.
Seraphina couldn’t help but let out an exasperated sigh. “He’s not my mate anymore. Why would he need to know?

She realized why Wilmot looked so miserable.
He must have found out that Trista had also volunteered for the mission.
Wilmot was left speechless by her question.
After a long silence, he looked at her, eyes red-rimmed, and pleaded, “Please… take care of her for me.”
“You don’t have to ask,” Seraphina replied. “Trista’s one of my closest friends. Of course, I’ll take care of her.”
Wilmot nodded, then stared back toward Trista’s office. He knew Trista was just as courageous and stubborn as any werewolf, and that there was no talking her out of it. So he gave in.
Seconds later, he looked back at Seraphina and said, “Thank you.”
With that, he turned and walked away.
Seraphina watched him disappear down the corridor before making her way to Trista’s office.
Inside, Trista sat behind her desk, flipping through a patient’s medical chart.
As Seraphina entered, she greeted her casually.
“I just ran into Wilmot,” Seraphina said.
Trista paused for a split second before shrugging with studied indifference. “He doesn’t want me going to Ukraine. We had a huge fight over it.”
Although Seraphina had volunteered herself-and kept insisting they’d be stationed in a protected area-she knew perfectly well there was no such thing as absolute safety in the middle of a war and an epidemic.
Deep down, she didn’t want Trista taking the risk either.
“Maybe… whatever happened between Wilmot and that actress really was just a misunderstanding,” she said carefully. “Why don’t you sit down and talk things through with him?”
Trista looked up from the chart and raised an eyebrow. “You’re taking his side now?”
Seraphina pressed her lips together.
Having lived through the collapse of her own marriage, she had always supported Trista’s decisions, even though she believed Wilmot truly loved Trista.
She knew it wasn’t an outsider’s place to step between a couple.
