Caldwell’s voice carried a hint of complexity, yet his sharp wolf eyes were unusually bright.

Ever since Seraphina learned about his feelings for her, hearing that familiar nickname from his lips had felt different.

She gave an awkward smile. “Caldwell, I’m not a kid anymore. You should stop calling me that. It feels a little strange.”

Caldwell only smiled. “But I think that nickname suits you.”

Seraphina felt helpless. If she had known this would happen, she would never have mentioned that the cat’s name was the same as her childhood nickname.

As if he could read her mind, Caldwell said, “Have you never wondered why that cat had that name? It was chosen for you in the first place.”

Seraphina froze. Surprise filled her eyes.

But she quickly understood what he meant.

She had never told anyone.

Caldwell noticed the confusion in her eyes. His gaze softened as he looked at her. “Four years ago, I heard Garfield call you that. I remembered it.”

Seraphina recalled that she had still been pursuing her doctorate at Shadowfang Academy.

Back then, she had spent most of her time in the laboratory.

She vaguely remembered one time when she walked out of the lab and ran into her father, Garfield.

At the time, Garfield had probably been teasing her when he deliberately called her by her childhood

She had pretended not to hear him, hiding her face behind her notebook as she hurried away with her head down.

Garfield had only called her that once. Had Caldwell overheard it?

Remembering how ridiculous she must have looked back then, Seraphina felt embarrassed.

She had always thought she only met Caldwell after the avalanche in Alaska.

He looked at Seraphina. “How long are you planning to stay here?”

Seraphina looked toward the patients resting under the tents in the distance. “I’ll leave when the support

team tells us to withdraw.”

Caldwell followed her gaze and nodded. “It won’t last much longer.”

Most of the major armed factions in Ukraine had already been defeated by government forces. Only two groups remained, still fighting for territory.

One of them was the militia led by Moses, which had been fighting the most aggressively.

They had shown no regard for civilians, and countless innocent people had died at their hands.

Their brutality had drawn condemnation and outrage from the international community.

But that did not stop them from continuing their violence across Ukraine.

More and more civilians were brought to the medical relief zone. Seraphina and the other doctors who had come to help became busier than ever.
