Verity:
"She’s fine. She probably just hit her head somewhere and lost consciousness."
A voice reached my ears. It sounded very calm and casual, something that belonged to someone very normal.
I groaned, trying to move around, when I felt the soft mattress beneath me.
It didn’t take me too long to realize I was in a comfortable bed.
For a second, everything seemed normal.
I had no complaints until reality hit me.
The woods, the lycan, and the man in the fox mask.
I immediately sat up, turning to look around and realizing I was in a guest room.
The door was wide open.
A doctor in a white coat was standing there with none other than Alpha King Ragnar.
"Oh, I guess she woke up," the doctor said, pointing at me.
The presence of the Alpha behind the doctor told me that we were in the Red Mist Pack.
How we had arrived and what had happened, I was really curious to know it all.
Ragnar looked at me before paying the doctor.
Then he and the Alpha behind him stepped into the room.
"How are you feeling?" the Alpha asked.
He was probably in his late forties, a very kind-looking man.
"Much better," I replied, my eyes moving to Ragnar.
He seemed to have healed pretty quickly.
Last night, he had huge bite marks and scars on him, at least in his black wolf form.
I remembered it.
It was so huge. Its fur was shining.
I think I could say I had never seen a wolf that big, but the only reason I couldn’t really focus on it was because my entire attention was on the lycan.
The lycan stood even taller and looked even scarier than him.
And, well, uglier too.
Whereas Ragnar’s wolf seemed majestic, with shining black fur, gray eyes, heavy paws, and huge claws.
His fangs were big too.
But then, who was the man behind the fox mask?
I can say he outshined everyone last night.
"I’ll prepare dinner for you too. Please stay for the night," the Alpha said with a gentle smile before walking out of the room.
Now it was just me and Ragnar.
I was covered in a beautiful, plush, soft blanket, but my head was still stuck on those words.
’My mate said he will find me again.’
Ragnar walked over, dragged a chair closer, and sat down.
He sat with one hand resting on his thigh, his elbow raised to shoulder level. His other leg was drawn up so he could rest his elbow on it.
"How did you survive the lycan?" he asked.
The first question out of his mouth was already shocking because even I was confused.
How would I tell anyone how I had survived?
Would they believe me if I told them I had seen a man who called himself the Fox King?
"I don’t know. I just know that I was running from the lycan, and then I hid under a tree."
I lied, leaving out everything I knew about the Fox King.
Ragnar zoned out for a moment.
"It killed our driver," he whispered.
Maybe Ragnar was disappointed because, despite always being cocky about his powers and strength, he couldn’t beat the lycan.
The rest of the night was odd.
I was lost in thought, wondering if I had hit my head and passed out, and the rest had just been a dream.
The doctor did say that I hit my head.
I don’t remember doing that.
I remembered passing out because of the Fox King.
But what the fuck was a Fox King?
There was no such thing.
I’d never heard of it.
And of course, I fucking hit my head.
What a dumbass.
"Earth to Verity," Ragnar commented, and my body jolted.
Later, we had dinner in the pack, and I moved up to the rooftop just to be alone in silence.
That’s when Ragnar arrived.
I was standing next to the small railing at the edge of the rooftop.
He stood tall, his hands in his pants pockets.
He sighed heavily.
"You don’t agree with me, do you?" he commented, making me slowly turn my head toward him.
"About what?" I asked.
"The fence thing," he mumbled.
I let the silence linger between us before I added, "What if the lycan can shapeshift? What if it isn’t a lycan all the time? What if it belongs to a pack?"
Even saying all that made my skin fill with goosebumps.
