Verity:
The asshole had finally left the house.
It had been five minutes.
I sat on the couch, thinking about his words.
I couldn’t keep doing that.
I guessed it was time to do something about him.
But how?
He knew too much.
I grimaced, confused about one thing.
He had met me only a little while ago after we matched on a dating app.
How the heck had he figured out so much about me?
Anyone who knew me now couldn’t trace my past.
They would only know what everyone else knew.
So how the heck was he so well informed?
I sighed, thinking about getting up and changing, when I heard a knock at the door.
The door was open, though. I hadn’t locked it after Roman walked out.
I got to my feet, but then decided to simply call, "Come in."
That was only because the person was already standing in the open doorway.
Jaguar.
It didn’t make sense.
I had been expecting Ragnar.
Then my eyes drifted to the file in his hands.
I frowned, even more confused.
I wasn’t sure there had been enough time for Ragnar to go back home and give the file to Jaguar.
So Jaguar had to have been somewhere nearby.
That made sense.
He had been visiting Mrs. Baker.
He thought he was being slick.
Mrs. Baker thought she was the only one spying.
Little did they know, I’d been spying on them even more than they had been spying on me.
"May I?" Jaguar asked.
I gave him a gentle smile, tucking my hair behind my ear with the same hand that was wrapped in a bandage.
Jaguar’s eyes immediately narrowed at it.
Of course, if he’d been around, he would have seen that I’d come home without any bandages.
"Uh, this file," I said, acting as though I hadn’t left it behind.
"Oh yeah, my brother said you left it in the car, so I decided to return it," Jaguar replied.
His skin looked so smooth, and his green eyes shone against the dark brown he was wearing.
He approached me and held out the file.
I pretended not to notice and accidentally lifted my burned hand before quickly pulling it behind my back.
Then I reached for the file with my uninjured hand, but he didn’t let go.
I looked up at him in confusion and watched the way his body tensed.
"What happened to your hand?" he murmured.
"Nothing," I replied, pretending to grow anxious.
He was so stunned that he didn’t react immediately.
Then he finally realised what was happening and wrapped his arms around me with even more passion and intensity.
"I just—-feel like—someone is always watching me."
The moment I said that, I made my body shudder to play the part of a terrified woman.
I heard Jaguar let out a very audible gulp.
"What?" he asked, slowly pulling me away while keeping his hands on my arms and holding me close.
"I swear," I insisted. "It just feels like somebody is always watching me. Recording me. I don’t know." I gulped
"Could it be Gigi’s stalker?" I asked, looking up at him innocently.
I watched the realization hit him.
When he had ordered people to spy on me, he had also put my security and privacy on display.
Regret crossed his face as he looked away.
"I think I should just go back to the mainland," I murmured, lowering my gaze to the hands clutching his jacket.
"No," he snapped immediately, making me lift my eyes to his and jolt slightly.
"I mean– no. You’re not going to give up because of some crazy— man stalking you."
Jaguar paused between his words because he knew the discomfort I was feeling wasn’t because of Gigi’s stalker alone.
It was because he had placed spies around me.
He remained silent, just watching me, his eyes shifting as though he were trying to figure out where he had gone wrong and how to fix his mistake.
"You know," I murmured softly, "I think I should move— in with my boyfriend."
I added that to give him another hint that I was so desperate for protection that I was about to throw myself straight into the arms of an abusive man.
Jaguar’s hold on me tightened.
I could already feel the urgency in him to snap me out of it without saying a word.
