Chapter 15 You’re Falling For Her!
“I’ll make more tomorrow. Anything specific you want?” Shane asked.
Layla noticed Shane was in a cheerful mood. “Make some cups. And work on that distillation setup. I really don’t want to keep drinking raw water.”
In the apocalypse, over ninety-nine percent of water sources had been contaminated. Finding clean water was hard, but drinking purified water was an instinct she couldn’t shake.
“As for this pot, we’ll use it for the wolf meat.”
She continued butchering, making no effort to hide her complaints.
“This wolf is too skinny. Look. There’s hardly any fat. Without fat, you’ll be hungry quickly.”
Shane sat nearby, shaping a cup, listening to Layla’s complaints. Strangely, he didn’t find it annoying. On the contrary, it felt somewhat soothing.
He shook his head, thinking he was acting a bit odd.
As night settled, they continued their work.
Layla had stripped all the meat from the wolf and buried the bones.
The freshly fired clay pot was washed and placed over the fire.
Layla tossed the trimmed fat into it. “We only got half a pot of fat from such a big wolf.”
Under the intense flames, the fat sizzled and rendered oil. Layla stood by with a small spatula, stirring and watching. Soon, the rendered oil was deep enough to submerge the fat. She didn’t need to watch it as closely anymore.
She took the opportunity to slice the remaining lean meat into strips.
She scooped out the crispy fried fat pieces and tossed the lean meat into the oil.
Shane placed the finished cups beside the fire to bake. Anticipating the possibility of failure, he had made six clay forms this time.
He ate a couple of the crispy, fat pieces, still hot enough to make his fingertips red.
His eyes lit up, and before Layla could ask, he’d already learned to offer the verdict. “Delicious.”
Layla sprinkled some salt on them. He ate even more eagerly.
Once the moisture from the lean meat was gone, shrinking it to two-thirds its size, she placed it on washed leaves.
Shane quickly grabbed several pieces of fried meat and stuffed them into his mouth, cheeks bulging as he chewed.
Layla gave him a suspicious look. He picked up the clay again and started kneading.
“What are you making?” she asked.
“Plates,” he mumbled, his mouth full of crispy bits.
Layla nodded. They each went back to work.
The smell of roasted meat filled the air.
[She really knows how to cook!]
[She grew up on a remote planet. She must have gone through so much to learn all these skills. Honestly, if I’d been through what she has, I’d probably be just as “vicious”.]
[Am I the only one who noticed Prof. Slater made her a plate? So sweet!]
He had spotted a comment among the countless scrolling messages.
[You’re falling for her!]
Falling for her?
That concept wasn’t in his mental database.
He considered it, then picked up a strip of meat, still slightly warm and chewy.
Not hungry anymore, he slowly finished the bowl of jerky as the clay pot neared dryness, ready for firing tomorrow.
Instead of entering the treehouse, he crawled into the stone cave below, leaned against the rock wall, and closed his eyes for a quick nap.
Their Vanguards shut down for the night.
Liam blinked at the dark screen, a flicker of interest in his eyes.
He hadn’t expected the wild wolf he chased away to become Layla’s meal.
Her crisp and decisive actions made him a little suspicious.
Is she still the timid, cowardly, foolish, and cunning Layla I used to know?
What happened? Or has this all been a facade of hers all along?
He muttered, “You can handle one, but what about a pack?”
