Chapter 69 The General Arrives
Even colder than before.
Apparently, Liam rubbed Shane the wrong way even more than Sebastian did.
Yates’ eyes flickered.
Liam walked over, his gaze sweeping over Yates briefly before landing on Shane.
“So Layla’s letting new blood move into her cabin?”
Shane’s already unpleasant expression turned downright thunderous.
Yates froze in place, not daring to move.
“Your name’s Yates, right? A pika beastkin?” Shane hadn’t even spoken yet, but Liam had already shifted his
attention to Yates.
Yates shuddered.
This was an imperial general standing right in front of him. How could he not be terrified?
“Y-yes, General Hartwell.”
“Oh, don’t be so formal. There are no generals on this show. Just call me Liam.”
“Liam!” Shane’s icy voice cut through the air. “Do you remember why you’re here?”
Liam’s eyebrow arched slightly. “Of course I do. But since you asked, I’d like to ask you the same thing. Do you remember why you’re here?”
Shane was silent for a moment. “I do.”
He turned and walked into the yard, ignoring Liam and leaving Yates behind as well.
Outside the gate, Liam gave Yates another look, then sidled up to him cheerfully. “So how did Layla end up keeping you?”
George had wanted to stay, and Layla had chased him off.
She’d even said some pretty harsh things. Before Liam came over, George had been complaining to him
about it.
George couldn’t make the cut, but this little pika could?
Both in entertainment. George was way more famous than Yates. Richer, of higher standing, more accomplished—he outclassed Yates in every way. Liam wanted to know what they-no, what George-had
lost to.
Yates shrank back a little, his voice tiny.
Even though Liam was being friendly, it was hard not to be nervous around someone with so much power.

“I ran into a fox yesterday. Layla saved me, and she brought me back with her.”
George didn’t believe it.
That’s it?
“Yes.” Yates nodded firmly.
He didn’t mention that Layla had kept him because he knew how to work.
[Yates isn’t telling the whole truth. Layla keeps him because he’s hardworking and always sees what needs to be done.]
[But in Yates’ eyes, she did save him. Put yourself in his shoes—if that happened to me, I’d instinctively see Layla as my savior too. As for the work? Yates has always been diligent. He’d do those things anyway
[Does anyone else feel like Liam is fishing for information from Yates?]
[Why would he fish for info? He doesn’t even like Layla! Does Liam belong to Stella?]
[Seriously? It’s been this long, and Stella’s fans still haven’t found her stream link?]
[Excuse me? This is Liam’s live stream. Liam is Stella’s mate. Of course, we Stellights are here keeping an eye on things.]
[You Stellights are like ghosts. Sharing the same internet as you is embarrassing.]
Liam gave Yates a thoughtful look, then followed Shane into Layla’s yard.
“Tsk…”
No matter how many times he came here, he couldn’t help being impressed.
Layla had started out with the worst setup of anyone. And now, barely half a month later, she had the best.
No wonder Shane had stayed and didn’t want to leave.
He hadn’t been watching Layla’s stream much the past few days. He had no idea what those two were up to.
He carried two bags of meat in and dropped them heavily on the table, ignoring Shane’s thunderous expression as he turned to Layla. “This bag is for salt. That bag-turn it into jerky, same as before.”
Yates scurried in from outside, grabbed the bag Liam had designated for jerky, and headed for the cooking pot. “I’ve got this.”
Layla had taught him yesterday. He’d done it once. He had the hang of it now.
Liam gave Yates a dubious look, then asked Layla, “I heard you saved him?”
“Not really,” Layla said. “If he hadn’t shifted back to beast form, that fox would have just chased him. It wouldn’t have actually eaten him.”
Yates had just panicked-that was all.

Chapter 69 The General Arrives
But pika beastkin were naturally timid. It was normal to be terrified when facing a natural predator.
Liam nodded, then tilted his head toward Shane, who was sitting to the side stewing in silence. “What’s up with him?”
Layla shook her head. “No idea.”
He’d been off since yesterday.
No, not yesterday. For days now.
He wouldn’t look at her kindly. He wouldn’t say what was on his mind. He wouldn’t say yes or no to anything -just made her guess.
Why should she play guessing games with him?
Shane had been sitting sideways to Layla. When he heard her say, “No idea,” his eyes went wide, and he spun
around to stare at her.
Layla ignored him. She turned to Liam. “You came to trade salt with me. Did you clear it with Stella?”
“Why would I clear it with her?” Liam answered with a question-but that was an answer enough.
