Zavier’s call came through not long after.

“Raymond, how did it go? You met Ms. Belmont, right? What did she think?”

Raymond glanced at his faint reflection in the car window and let a slow, knowing smile touch his lips. His tone was casual, almost light. “Yeah, I did. You’ve got good taste, Dad.”

“Oh?” Zavier sounded genuinely surprised. “So you liked her?”

“Very much,” Raymond replied, drawing the words out slightly. “She’s… interesting, to say the least.”

Now Zavier seemed truly taken aback.

His famously hard–to–please son–giving such a positive review after just one meeting?

Raymond didn’t give him time to ask more. He started the engine. “Alright, Dad, I’m heading back to the office. We can talk details tonight.”

After hanging up, he dropped his phone onto the passenger seat.

The mood in the car was nothing like the easygoing one he’d just shown on the call.

His eyes grew thoughtful, and the faint amused curve still on his lips carried the sharp, evaluating look of a hunter watching its prey.

Then, the phone on the passenger seat buzzed again.

Thinking it might be Riley following up, Raymond tapped his Bluetooth earpiece to answer.

“Raymond, it’s me.”

It was Melissa.

Raymond’s voice cooled, edged with ice. “What is it?”

He didn’t even bother with Mom.
