He Came Back Running (Maya and Mason) novel Chapter 287

Chapter 287

Maya’s POV

The invitation arrived two days after we returned from the address.

I would need another chapter of my life to fully process what we had found there….

The invitation, when it arrived, felt at first like an ordinary piece of mail.

Cream envelope. Formal seal.

I almost set it aside unread.

I opened it while Alex was on a call in the other room.

A private charity event…. the exclusive category of gathering that existed at the intersection of philanthropy and networking, where the stated purpose was raising funds for a cause and the actual purpose was the careful, deliberate accumulation of relationships between people who mattered.

Business owners.

Politicians.

Investors whose names appeared in the kind of coverage that treated their movements as newsworthy in

themselves.

I scanned the guest list attached to the invitation…..

A name stopped me halfway down the page.

I read it again.

Held the paper closer, as though proximity might change what was printed on it.

The same name.

The one I had found in my father’s diary, not simply mentioned, but written with the wariness that had characterised the later entries, the careful, guarded quality of a man documenting someone he did not trust.

I set the invitation on the table.

Called for Alex.

He came through from the other room, his expression shifting when he saw my face.

“What is it,” he said.

I handed him the invitation

He read the cover letter first, then the guest list, his eyes moving down the page with the methodical attention he brought to every document that mattered.

He stopped at the same place I had.

“You think this person knows something,” he said.

It wasn’t quite a question

“My father wrote his name for a reason,” I said. “In the diary. Not in passing…. deliberately, with the same caution he used for everyone else he was worried about.” I looked at the invitation. “This isn’t a coincidence, Alex. Someone sent me an invitation to an event where this person will be present.”

Alex looked at the guest list again.

“Someone who knows what’s in the diary,” he said.

“Or someone who wants us there for a different reason entirely,” I said.

Neither of us said what we were both thinking…. that after everything, after the surveillatice, after the address, after the note that had told me to say nothing until I understood who I was speaking to, an unsolicited invitation arriving with this particular name attached felt less like coincidence and more like an

arrangement.

Alex looked at me.

“We go,” he said. “Carefully.”

***

That evening.

I dressed with the deliberate attention of someone preparing not for an occasion but for an operation, the kind of dress that allowed movement, the kind of shoes that would not betray me if I needed to walk quickly, the small clutch that held exactly what I might need and nothing that could compromise anything if it were searched.

Alex watched me from the doorway.

“We don’t have to stay,” he said. “If anything feels wrong, we leave. No explanation required. You tell me, and we go.”

“I know,” I said

“I mean it,” he said. “Your blood pressure, the twins, everything the doctor said….”

“I know,” I said again.

I turned to face him.

“I need to see this through,” I said. “But I promise you, if it feels wrong, I’ll tell you before it becomes something worse than uncomfortable.”

He held my gaze for a long moment.

Then nodded

The event was held in a private estate on the edge of the city….

We arrived at eight.

The room was already full.

I noticed it trimediately… Everyone here was watching everyone else.

I understood, within minutes of arriving, that this was not a room built for genuine connection.

It was a room built for calculation.

I did not feel comfortable.

Alex stayed close.

His hand found the small of my back at intervals, the grounding presence that had become, across everything we had survived together, as necessary as breathing.

We moved through the room slowly.

Greeting people whose names I recognised from headlines, whose faces I had seen in coverage without ever expecting to stand across from them in person.

I kept scanning….

Then I saw it.

Near the front of the room, where the evening’s formal proceedings would presumably take place…. a long table, place cards arranged with the accurate precision of an event planner who understood exactly who

needed to sit beside whom.

I moved closer.

Not obviously…. the careful, unhurried pace of someone who appeared to simply be admiring the room’s arrangement rather than searching for anything specific.

I found it.

The same name.
