Chapter 297
Mason’s POV
The anger arrived before I could stop it.
Not the calculated, controlled fury I had learned to deploy across years of business negotiations and personal manoeuvring… something rawer, arriving from a place I had believed permanently sealed the day I stood at his graveside and accepted the hollow finality of a closed casket I had never questioned.
“Why,” I said.
The word arrived with more force this time.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead? Nine years, I stood at your grave. I inherited everything. I built my
entire life around the permanent absence of you, and now you’re sitting behind a desk telling me it was necessary?

He watched me without flinching….
“Disappearing was the only way I could survive,” he said.
“Survive what?” I said. “Who? Give me a name.”
He was quiet…
“You expect me to accept that,” I said. “No explanation, no reasoning, just… necessary. As though that word is supposed to answer everything.”
“It was necessary,” he repeated.
“You abandoned me,” I said.
The words carried a weight I had not fully anticipated speaking aloud.
“You let me grieve you. You let me build my identity around losing you. Every decision I’ve made since that funeral…. every single one, was shaped by the particular version of the world where you no longer existed to guide it.” My voice cracked. “And you’re telling me that was necessary.”
He looked at me for a long moment…
“I sent the message,” he said. “Last night. The one telling you I wanted to see you….”
I stared at him….
“You knew about the phone call,” I said. “You arranged the vehicle. The men who intercepted me before the police caught up”
“Yes,” he said.
“And the chase,” I said slowly. “The police finding,me in the first place.”
He did not confirm this directly.
He did not need to.
“I’ve been watching,” he said. “From a distance. For considerably longer than you would probably like to know.”
“Watching what,” I said…

“Everything,” he said. “Maya’s investigation into her father’s death. Alex Voss and his father’s involvement in
hat happened decades ago. Zara Collins, and her cooperation with the authorities across the past several weeks….. “He paused. “And you. Every mistake, every operation, every decision that has led you to sitting in this chair tonight instead of somewhere considerably safer….”
“If you were watching,” I said, “why didn’t you help me sooner? Why let me run for weeks, evade the police, lose everything I built, when you apparently had the resources to intervene at any point?”
“Because you made too many mistakes,” he said. “You attracted attention to things that were meant to remain permanently hidden.”
I felt something in my chest tighten.
“The IV tampering,” he said. “The wedding shooting. Marcus Webb, and the careless way you managed his removal after he became inconvenient. The fabricated photographs, the corporate leak…. each one, individually, might have been survivable. Together, sustained across months, they created exactly the kind of coordinated investigative pressure that has begun uncovering things far larger than your personal obsession with Maya Hargrove.”
“I didn’t know,” I said.
“You didn’t ask,” he said. “That’s the difference.”
I sat with that.
“What have I threatened,” I said. “Exactly.”
He looked at me.
“There are people,” he said, “who cannot afford for certain secrets to come out. Arrangements decades old. Connections that reach considerably further than a single corporate rivalry or a single murder investigation.” He paused. “Maya is getting dangerously close to discovering them.”
I stared at him.
“You’re not helping me,” I said slowly.
“You didn’t bring me here to rescue me,” I said.
He did not answer immediately….
“You need something from me,” I said.
The silence that followed confirmed it more completely than any words could have.
