He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 20

Nelson quickly sidestepped, grabbing the end of the cane before it could connect. "People would kill for your personal number, yet she wouldn't even stay for a meal, and you're still defending her."

"It's obvious she's had a rough few years. It's only natural she's become closed off."

"Right. Or maybe she's just completely heartless."

Leaving the restaurant, Juniper headed straight for Caleb's office.

Caleb looked miserable, completely buried under a mountain of paperwork.

His father had been a notorious playboy with a string of illegitimate children. Caleb wasn't the most capable among them. Now that one of his illegitimate brothers had been brought into the fold, operating with ruthless efficiency, Caleb was losing ground rapidly.

Worse, the Saint family was now directly applying pressure. If his father found out he was the reason the Saints were angry, he would lose his inheritance entirely.

Even though Juniper was his best closer, his hands were tied.

"Mr. Xavier."

As she sat down, Caleb immediately put his hands up, assuming she was going to beg for her job. "I will pay you six months of severance upfront. I know I'm doing you dirty here, but please, leave it at that."

Juniper shook her head quickly. "I'm not trying to make this harder for you. I know exactly what kind of pressure you're under. Do you remember the Lumina Workshop we tested a while ago?"

Of course he did. He had set it up as a backup plan, knowing the Xavier family empire was teetering on the edge of chaos. If he lost the succession war, he could very well be left with nothing.

"Mr. Xavier, the Saint family is targeting you because my name is tied to your auction house. What if I move over to the Lumina Workshop? It isn't registered under anyone's name. Our entire strategy was built around the middle-class market, focusing on people wanting to liquidate idle jewelry. I can manage the workshop and handle those clients directly. The target demographic isn't high society, so I won't need to attend elite networking events. The Saints will never cross paths with me. I'll still be working for you, and we can split the consignment fees evenly."
