He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 35

Mrs. Saint was so furious she nearly passed out on the spot. "I am not joking with you. Juniper was on the phone with me just now, and she suddenly vanished!"

Nelson slowly flipped through the documents on his desk. The handprint on his cheek still stung, and his busted lip had scabbed over, leaving a faint taste of copper in his mouth. "You really need to spend more time worrying about your own health. At your age, why are you agonizing over an outsider?"

"Nelson Saint, I am going to die of a heart attack because of you! Don't you dare regret this!"

After hanging up, Mrs. Saint leaned heavily on her cane, frustrated by her own frail body. She turned to her caretaker. "Help me to Arthur's study."

The patriarch of the Saint family had retired long ago, but his absolute authority remained unquestioned.

Mrs. Saint hadn't interfered in family matters for years, preferring a quiet life. But if she needed the family's resources to find Juniper now, she had to go through her husband.

Meanwhile, Nelson sat perfectly still in his office chair, suddenly entirely unable to focus on the files in front of him.

His brow furrowed tightly as he picked up his phone and scrolled to that all-too-familiar number.

Just as he was about to hit dial, his assistant's voice came through the door. "Sir, the meeting starts in five minutes."

Nelson, dressed in a sharp black suit, stood up abruptly. Finally, he gave the order, "Push it back half an hour."

He strode past his assistant and headed straight for the elevator.

The assistant looked stunned. Ever since the CEO had recovered, he had never once delayed work for personal reasons.

Especially since this work ethic was a promise Nelson had made to his comatose older brother. It was why he pushed himself so relentlessly.

Quickly recovering, the assistant hurried after him.

When Juniper finally regained consciousness, she heard voices murmuring from the front seats of the car.

"Grab her phone. I need to send a message."

Her head was throbbing. The unfamiliar surroundings filled her with dread as she watched her phone get snatched away.

Her vision was completely blurred. A moment later, she saw her phone tossed out the window in an arc.

A rag clamped down over her nose and mouth. The acrid, chemical smell made her stomach heave, and she faded back into darkness.

She had no idea how much time had passed when she finally dragged her weak, aching body up from the ground. As her vision cleared, she recognized her surroundings instantly.

Oakley Memorial Gardens.

The cemetery wasn't in the city; it was back in her rural hometown.

Her phone was nowhere to be found, and the sun was already high in the sky. She must have been unconscious out here all night.

Her clothes were damp with morning dew, the cuffs of her pants soaked through.

She had no idea why she had been kidnapped and dumped here, though today just happened to be the anniversary of Macy's brother's death—the very reason she was supposed to be here anyway.
