He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 53

Juniper didn't hail a cab. She just walked, letting the city streets blur around her in a numb daze.

When her legs finally gave out, she collapsed onto a park bench.

The shadows stretching across the pavement felt like they were swallowing her alive, dragging her down into a bottomless abyss.

A short distance away, Nelson sat parked in the dark, resting his chin on his knuckles as he watched her in absolute silence.

A lit cigarette rested between his fingers, the smoke drifting out the cracked window, softening the predatory sharpness of his features.

They were right by Capital University. The luxury townhomes directly behind Juniper were some of the most expensive real estate in the city.

It was the exact neighborhood where she and Nelson had once lived together.

Nelson clamped the cigarette between his teeth, his jaw tight enough to snap the filter.

He reached for the door handle, but froze as a man suddenly walked up to Juniper.

Even from a distance, the streetlights caught the man's profile. It was an uncanny, ghost-like resemblance to the dead guy.

Nelson sat dead still. The cherry of his cigarette burned dangerously close to his skin, but he didn't blink.

Juniper was clearly stunned. She stared up at the man, her eyes wide as if trying to figure out if she was hallucinating.

She stood up, the exhaustion completely wiped from her system.

The man wasn't wearing a corporate suit, but a simple white dress shirt and slacks. He had an incredibly gentle aura. "Are you alright?" he asked with a warm smile.

He pulled out a business card and offered it. "I'm a doctor. I was just taking a walk and noticed you sitting here alone. I wanted to make sure you weren't having a medical emergency. Don't worry, I'm not a creep."

Juniper took the card, her mind spinning. "Dr. Alistair Vaughn?"

The elegant font confirmed it.

Alistair chuckled softly, pointing down the avenue. "I work at the city hospital a couple of miles away."

The resemblance was so violently striking it made her head spin.

But Cillian had died before he even turned twenty.

He was Macy's older brother.
