He was just applying medicine; why was he suddenly... Stella's ears burned red, and she hurriedly yanked her foot back.
"Thank you, Mr. Fuller. I feel much better."
Forcing down the primal heat surging in his chest, Jarrod stood up, wiped his hands, and sat in the chair across from her.
"Why did you defend me in front of Grandpa today?"
Stella hadn't expected him to go from staring at her like a starving wolf to asking such a serious question in the blink of an eye. She was completely thrown off.
"You even tried to block his walking stick. Weren't you afraid of getting hurt?" he pressed.
Stella hadn't overthought it in the moment. She simply couldn't stand the thought of Jarrod getting beaten, especially since he hadn't done anything wrong.
"I'm a girl; Grandpa would never actually hit me," she said easily. "And I wasn't defending you. I was just telling the truth."
Jarrod watched her carefully. Her expression was completely open, entirely devoid of any ulterior motives.
"Stella, does that prenuptial agreement bother you?"
His tone was entirely flat. "You brought it up when you were with your friend at The Amber Lounge, and you mentioned it to Silas again today."
Stella froze. At the lounge, Summer had suggested that Jarrod might have feelings for her, but that she had closed her heart off because of the contract. And today, Silas had joked about Jarrod caring for her.
So, Jarrod had heard all of that?
Did it bother her?
Not particularly. After all, it had been her choice from the very beginning.
After a few seconds of silence, she met his gaze and spoke softly. "It doesn't bother me. You didn't force me to sign it; it was my choice. Besides, the Quinns and I both benefited from it."
"When I had that contract drafted, it wasn't an attack on you or your family, and it wasn't meant to humiliate you," Jarrod stated clearly.
