Stella wanted to give a polite, dignified response, but she simply couldn't force the words out. Instead, she maintained her silence.
It was George who eagerly chimed in. "My son-in-law is certainly exceptional! As the eldest grandson and the heir to the Fuller Group, he has immense status and brilliant business acumen. He truly is one of a kind!"
"You guys chat, I'm going outside for a smoke."
Seemingly disinterested in the topic, Logan stood up and headed toward the small garden.
Stella glanced out the window and desperately wanted to follow him.
But George stopped her in her tracks. "Where do you think you're going?"
Stella quickly fabricated an excuse her father wouldn't refuse. "I'm going to see if Jarrod has arrived yet."
"If he's not here, give him a call. Dinner is almost ready!"
"Okay."
As soon as Stella stepped outside, she immediately headed in Logan's direction.
It didn't take long to find him leaning against a tree, smoking.
His tall, lean silhouette was faintly obscured as the pale smoke drifted slowly into the autumn breeze, blurring the sharp lines of his profile.
"Lolo..." Stella called out, her voice trembling softly.
Logan turned his head. Seeing her, his brows furrowed in annoyance. "What are you doing here?"
His voice was just as crisp as she remembered, but it was wrapped in a cold, distant hostility that made Stella's throat tighten painfully.
Tears spilled down her cheeks. "I'm Star. Do you really not remember me at all?"
Logan tapped the ash from his cigarette. "Skylar told me about you. Our families lived in the same neighborhood when we were kids. You always liked following me around, and you developed some inappropriate feelings for me."
Stella froze, a sharp, stinging sensation hitting the back of her nose. "Inappropriate feelings? We agreed we'd go public with our relationship after graduation. You even promised you'd never marry anyone but me..."
Watching her cry didn't soften his expression in the slightest; in fact, his tone grew even colder. "I have no idea if what you're saying is true or not.
"I can't remember a lot of things since I woke up, but the moment I saw Skylar in the neurology department, I knew she was the woman I loved. When I found out she had been waiting for me all these years, I confessed my feelings to her."
