George gave Stella a firm nudge as he spoke, his tone tight. "Stella, go up to your room and change. Your pants are covered in dirt."

Beneath George's benevolent smile hid a deep well of annoyance.

Lacking the energy to care, Stella maneuvered past the luggage and grabbed a clean pair of pants from the closet.

She splashed some freezing water on her face to numb the ache in her chest before slowly heading downstairs.

In the living room, Jarrod was listening to George talk, his long, elegant fingers resting casually on his leg. His posture was effortlessly commanding, yet entirely unapproachable.
