Naomi didn't waste even the smallest opportunity. She immediately twisted her body, yanking her arm with all her strength to break free from Falcon's grip. Her fingers were almost free. Just a little more...
She was only a little more away from breaking free.
That hope had only just begun to surface when a hand clamped around her wrist, far tighter than before.
Falcon.
In a split second, he yanked Naomi back so violently that she lost her balance and crashed into his broad chest. The impact knocked the breath from her lungs.
“How dare you,” Falcon hissed. His voice was so low it was nearly drowned out by the roar of gunfire. Yet that was precisely what made the hairs on the back of Naomi's neck stand on end.
When Naomi looked up, she found Falcon's face only inches from hers. The look in his eyes had completely changed. The mocking smile was gone. All that remained was the cold fury that had been hidden beneath his calm exterior all this time.
“I warned you.”
Smack!
The slap struck Naomi across the face with a sharp crack that echoed throughout the warehouse. Her body was thrown to the side before slamming hard onto the concrete floor.
Crash!
The impact caused the back of her head to strike the floor lightly. Her vision went dark for a moment. A loud ringing filled her ears as a burning pain spread rapidly across her left cheek. A thin trickle of blood seeped from the corner of her mouth.
Naomi tried to push herself up with her trembling hands, but the strength seemed to drain completely from her body.
The entire warehouse suddenly fell silent. Even the exchange of gunfire that had been echoing all this time seemed to vanish in an instant.
Chris froze. His eyes were locked on Naomi lying on the floor. The world around him seemed to stop turning. He had seen Falcon commit countless acts of cruelty.
He had watched people beaten or killed without mercy. But seeing someone strike the face of the woman who had begun to fill his heart, something inside him seemed to snap.
“Naomi.” Chris's voice was barely more than a whisper. But the look in his eyes had changed. It was no longer mere anger, but a rage so overwhelming that it nearly stripped away every trace of his sanity.
Those words brought Brandon to a halt. So did Chris. Neither of them dared take the risk.
Naomi closed her eyes. Tears streamed down her cheeks once more. It wasn't because she was afraid of dying. Over the past several days, she had imagined that possibility countless times. What truly terrified her was watching Brandon and Chris sacrifice themselves because of her.
Falcon grinned again. This time, the corners of his mouth curled into a smile filled with triumph. “You came all this way,” he said, slowly shaking his head as though he pitied them, “to save her, didn't you?”
He began backing slowly toward the warehouse's side door, keeping Naomi as a human shield. Every step was measured, while his men moved into position behind him, forming a protective screen.
“The pity is,” he said, never taking his eyes off Brandon, “the only thing you'll witness is me taking her away.”
He then shifted his gaze to Chris. His eyes were filled with mockery. “And this time,” the corner of his mouth lifted again, “not one of you will be able to stop me.”
He came to a stop in the doorway of the warehouse's side exit. The night wind swept in from outside, stirring his black suit and Naomi's disheveled hair.
“Goodbye.” Falcon laughed. “If you dare,” he said, locking eyes with Chris one last time. “I hope you manage to find her before she starts forgetting all of you.”
