Silence once again settled over the night. Only the wind sweeping across the runway and the low hum of idling vehicle engines in the distance could be heard.
Falcon let out a quiet snort. His gaze swept across the faces before him one by one, then a faint sneer appeared at the corner of his mouth. “I thought you were smarter than this.”
He smirked. “Or,” his sharp gaze swept across the entire line of troops, “are you really willing to sacrifice a woman?”
Naomi closed her eyes. The pounding of her heart echoed so loudly in her ears that it drowned out almost every other sound around her. She could feel the cold metal of the pistol against her temple, and Falcon's steady breathing behind her. Every second felt unbearably long, as though time itself refused to move.
At the warehouse doorway, Brandon and Chris finally emerged with the Alpha Team members. The moment they saw that Falcon was truly surrounded, a flicker of hope briefly appeared in their eyes. But that hope vanished instantly when they saw the pistol still pressed against Naomi's head.
Brandon clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.
“Don't.” The word came out so quietly that it sounded more like a plea than a warning.
Beside him, Chris remained silent. His jaw was set, and his eyes never left Naomi. For the first time since arriving at the warehouse, he realized that even though hundreds of gun barrels now controlled the situation, Naomi's life rested entirely beneath Falcon's trigger finger.
That was what made the situation far more terrifying than the firefight a few minutes earlier.
Falcon lifted his chin slightly.
“Who's in command here?” he shouted. His gaze swept across every face standing behind the rifle barrels, as though challenging anyone brave enough to reveal themselves.
“Come on out.”
There was no answer.
Only the night wind continued sweeping across the runway, stirring Falcon's suit and Naomi's disheveled hair. The silence that settled over the scene felt strange, so profound that everyone's breathing seemed clearly audible.
Falcon let out a quiet snort. “See?”
He turned his head slightly toward Naomi. The muzzle of his pistol pressed against her temple once more, as if to make sure everyone remembered who was in control.
“They'll never dare.”
His gaze returned to the line of troops before him. No one moved. Not a single gun barrel shifted. Yet it was that very stillness that caused an uneasy feeling to creep into his mind. Something... wasn't right.
His last words had not even fully faded into the air when—
Bang!
The crack of a precision rifle shattered the silence.
Naomi felt the pressure against her body disappear.
Without even having time to think, she stumbled forward as her support suddenly disappeared. Both her knees nearly slammed into the ground, but with the last of her strength, she forced herself to keep moving away. Her breathing came in ragged gasps, her chest felt painfully tight, but only one thought filled her mind.
Get away.
As far away from Falcon as possible.
Behind her came the sound of knees striking the asphalt. Falcon had dropped to one knee.
Blood poured from both of his shoulders, dripping into a dark red pool beneath him. His breathing grew ragged, while the gaze that had always remained calm until now turned wild. His eyes darted in every direction, searching for an escape route that only seconds earlier he had been certain was within his grasp.
There was none.
For the first time, Don Falcon had lost control of the situation. But what was most terrifying was that the man's gaze was not fixed on the troops surrounding him. Instead, it remained locked on Naomi as she slowly moved farther away.
As though, even wounded, he still could not bear to let her go.
Meanwhile, Naomi was barely aware of what had just happened. The instant Falcon's grip disappeared from her body, instinct took over.
