"Cale?" Lydia's voice came out hoarse.
Cale let out a slow breath. He rubbed his face in frustration and immediately moved closer to Lydia. More than anything, he wanted to pull her into his arms, but seeing how fragile his wife looked, Cale stopped himself from doing so.
"Don't move too much," he said softly as he supported Lydia's shoulder when she tried to sit up again. "The doctor said your injuries still aren't completely stable."
But Lydia didn't seem to truly hear him. Her gaze swept anxiously around the room, as though hoping to find someone else.
"Jasper." Her lips spoke the name again.
This time, more clearly.
She unconsciously grabbed Cale's arm. "Where's Jasper? He's... he's okay, isn't he? He was shot. I saw so much blood."
The barrage of questions came so quickly that Lydia's breathing became uneven again. Her face turned even paler, while the monitor beside the bed once again emitted soft warning beeps in time with her rising heart rate.
"Lydia, my love." Cale tried to calm her.
But she quickly shook her head. "He brought me here. He kept forcing himself to stay conscious to show the way even though he was already..." Her voice began to tremble. "I don't even know how he managed to hold on back then."
If it hadn't been for Jasper... she might never have opened her eyes again.
"How is he?" she asked again, this time almost pleading. "Please tell me."
Cale fell silent.
He looked at Lydia for a few moments, then let out a long breath as he lowered his head. The corner of his lips curved into a faint smile that held no trace of happiness.
Quite the opposite. There was a hint of bitterness that he found impossible to hide. "I've been waiting for you to wake up since last night."
Lydia blinked.
Cale lifted his head again. Their eyes finally met.
"I'd already imagined all the different things you might say the moment you opened your eyes. Do you know how it felt like my heart was about to stop every time I looked at you, my love?"
"He survived, my love," he said between the kisses he placed on Lydia's hand.
Lydia closed her eyes for a moment. Her shoulders, which had been tense all this time, gradually relaxed, and a sigh of relief escaped before she could stop it. "Thank goodness."
Cale continued in a calm voice. "The bullet was removed early this morning. The doctor said his condition was critical for a while because he'd lost so much blood, but the surgery went well."
Lydia looked at Cale again.
"He's still unconscious," the man continued. "But his vital signs are stable. The doctors believe he'll pull through the critical stage."
Unconsciously, Lydia tightened her grip on Cale's hand.
"When he wakes up," she whispered softly, "I want to thank him in person."
Cale looked at his wife's face for a long moment before a faint smile finally appeared at the corner of his lips. This time, it wasn't the sorrowful smile from before, but one filled with respect.
