The morning at Cale’s mansion felt far more peaceful than it had over the past few weeks. There were no emergency calls, no hurried footsteps from the guards, and no tense faces that made Lydia feel as though something terrible could happen at any moment.
For the first time in a long while, she could sit in the dining room and enjoy breakfast without feeling the need to turn around every time she heard a sound from outside.
Unfortunately, that did not seem to apply to Cale.
Just as Lydia was about to reach for the teapot that was slightly out of her reach, Cale’s hand got to it first.
"I can get it myself," Lydia said with a soft sigh.
"I know."
"Then why did you take it?" Lydia looked at Cale in confusion.
Cale poured tea into her cup before calmly replying, "Because I’m here."
Lydia stared at him for a few seconds. "I was only getting the teapot."
"And I was only helping you."
Cale’s tone was so casual that Lydia could not find a reason to argue. She finally accepted the cup he handed her, but before she could take a sip, Cale turned his attention back to the plate in front of her.
"You haven’t finished your fruit."
Lydia shook her head. "I’m full."
"You’ve only eaten half of it, darling."
Lydia sighed. "Cale."
"Hm?"
"I’m pregnant, not sick."
Cale fell silent for a moment. His gaze dropped to Lydia’s stomach, which was still barely showing, before returning to his wife’s face. There was a tenderness in his eyes that he could hardly hide.
"I know."
"Then stop treating me like a patient."
"Does this count as strenuous activity?" Lydia asked in confusion.
"Yes."
"No," Lydia immediately protested.
"But that's six books, darling. They're heavy for you to carry."
Before Lydia could answer, Cale had already taken all the books from her hands. Lydia could only stare at the man's back as he walked ahead toward the bedroom.
"You really don't give me a chance to do anything."
Cale turned around while carrying the books. "There are still plenty of things you can do."
"Such as?"
"Smile. Be happy. Rest. Eat well. Keep me company."
Lydia fell silent. That simple answer somehow made her heart feel full. Cale continued walking as though unaware that his words had made Lydia smile.
