The top-floor corridor of The Royal Palace Hotel was lined with heavy, hand-woven wool carpets that muffled the sound of heels completely.

The suite layout emphasized absolute privacy, and Virginia and Mandy happened to be assigned rooms directly across from each other.

The key card beeped, but just as Virginia grabbed the handle, an arm blocked her path.

"Did I hit a nerve?!" Mandy scoffed, her eyes raking over Virginia's expensive silk dress. "What's there to brag about when you got all this by sleeping your way to the top? Archer is only spoiling you because you're a novelty. Once he's tired of you, you'll be nothing!"
