"Archer?" Chloe paused upon seeing him, large tears spilling from her eyes. "You finally came to see me. Have you abandoned me and Toby?"

Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, Archer lunged forward, locking a vice grip around her wrist and twisting sharply.

Chloe cried out in pain as the scissors clattered to the floor.

He forcefully shoved her away and kicked the weapon far out of reach.

Seeing this, the maids rushing in right behind him immediately lunged forward and pinned her down.

He withdrew his gaze, turning on his heel to stride over to the corner of the bed. He scooped up Toby, who was trembling violently.

The little boy was too terrified to even make a sound. He simply clutched Archer's shirt with a death grip, his vacant eyes stripped of any light.

"To the hospital!" Archer ordered, his brow furrowed deeply as he carried the boy out.

Madeline watched Chloe thrashing and screaming on the floor, weeping and throwing a fit. She watched as the maids injected her with a sedative, a flash of deep agony crossing her eyes.

But when she saw the lifeless, ghostly state of Toby in Archer's arms, the blood drained from her face, and she swayed on her feet, entirely unsteady.

Outside the emergency room.

Toby had been taken inside to have his wounds treated.

Archer stood in the hallway, his dark eyes pitch-black, betraying no emotion, though an unshakable exhaustion weighed heavily on his brow.

Madeline stood to the side, covering her face and weeping uncontrollably.

"Archer..." She looked up, her well-maintained face streaked with tears, her eyes filled with confusion and absolute weariness. "Did I do the wrong thing? Why? Why did it have to turn out like this?"

If she hadn't indulged Chloe back then and forced Virginia to end her marriage, would everything be entirely different now?

Archer's gaze remained fixed on the glowing red light above the ER doors, saying nothing.

He was exhausted too.
