The phone on the desk suddenly vibrated.
The screen lit up with the name "Archer Vanderbilt."
Virginia took a deep breath, pulled a tissue to dry her tears, and swiped to answer.
"Hello," she said, trying her best to make her voice sound normal.
There were two seconds of silence on the other end of the line.
"Have you been crying?"
The man's deep, steady voice carried a startlingly perceptive edge over the speaker.
Virginia tightened her grip on the phone. "No, just catching a cold."
Archer didn't call out her lie.
He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his executive office at the Vanderbilt Group, one hand tucked into his pocket as he stared down at the sprawling city traffic below.
"Are you free tonight?" he asked.
"Why?"
"Taking you and Cindy to dinner." Archer turned, walking to his desk to pick up a file. "There's a new exclusive restaurant on the east side. It has a dedicated kids' play area."
Virginia truly wasn't in the mood and wanted to decline, but remembering how much Cindy had been begging to go out and play, she relented. "Alright."
"I'll have Zachary pick you up at five-thirty."
...
At half past six that evening, they arrived at The Zenith Revolving Restaurant.
The restaurant enforced a strict membership policy to ensure maximum privacy, leaving only a few tables occupied across the entire floor.
Archer had swapped his meticulously tailored suit for a dark gray bespoke casual shirt, the top two buttons undone to reveal his sharp collarbones.
