She looked up, meeting the man's gaze head-on, her tone completely flat. "If I'm not mistaken, she's been cured for a while. This little act of playing the madwoman has gone on long enough; it's time to drop the curtain."

Archer looked at her indifferent expression, a suffocating weight pressing down on his chest until he could barely breathe.

"Virginia," he said, his voice terribly hoarse. "I will handle this."

"That is Mr. Vanderbilt's private matter. You don't need to report your methods to me," Virginia said, standing up and smoothing the hem of her blazer.

Having said her piece, she grabbed her purse and turned toward the door.

Archer shot to his feet, an instinctual urge driving him to stop her, to ask if there was truly nothing left for them to talk about.

But her retreating figure was too resolute. When she spoke, her bright eyes were sharp and rational, completely devoid of lingering affection.

His outstretched hand dropped in defeat. At that moment, he finally understood the true meaning of regret—and sheer, utter helplessness.
