I Chose Me Over My Marriage novel Chapter 13

Maxwell sounded intensely impatient.

"I don't know what kind of tantrum you're throwing, but I don't have time for this right now. Aria just got back, she's not acclimated to the city, and she sprained her ankle recently. My only priority is taking care of her, so you better behave and stop trying to piss me off."

"Also, sleep with whoever you want. I highly doubt anyone would actually want a secondhand woman like you. Lyra, if you act right, I can let you keep the title of Mrs. Sterling a little longer, so you don't become a complete laughingstock."

"You'd better listen to my advice, or I won't hesitate to use other methods."

With those final words, the call disconnected.

Beep, beep, beep—

The sound seemed to sync with Lyra's heartbeat, pausing just as her chest hitched.

It seemed that in Maxwell's eyes, she truly was completely worthless.

Lyra's hand slowly dropped to her side.

Since normal communication was impossible, she would have to resort to legal means.

To end this loveless marriage.

Knock, knock, knock—

A sudden knock on the door interrupted her thoughts.

She stood up, walked over, and peered through the peephole.

Seeing the person outside, she stiffened in surprise.

"Lyra, it's me."

At the sound of the man's voice, Lyra let out a long breath and opened the door.

The visitor was a man in his fifties, sharply dressed in a black suit, radiating a sense of quiet competence.

When he looked at Lyra, his face broke into a warm, fatherly smile.

"It's been a long time, Thomas."

Ever since she stubbornly insisted on marrying Maxwell, they hadn't seen each other for five years.

Thomas Rivers chuckled. "Aren't you going to invite me in?"

Realizing her lapse in manners, Lyra immediately stepped aside.

They sat across from each other in the living room.
