The woman Lyra called Chloe was her absolute best friend of many years—Chloe Thorne.
Seeing her, Chloe immediately threw her arms around Lyra's neck and dragged her over to an empty VIP booth.
"What's the deal? You move out of Maxwell's place and don't even tell me? I'm desperately in need of a roommate right now. Seriously, ditch the hotel and come crash with me. We can take on the world together!"
Chloe declared dramatically, grabbing a bottle of liquor and taking a massive swig.
"Live with you? So I can play nursemaid to a drunk every day?"
Lyra dropped into the booth, letting the plush sofa swallow her completely, and looked up at Chloe.
"Pace yourself, or I won't be able to carry you out of here."
Chloe pouted and plopped down next to Lyra.
"Tell me, do best friends actually share the same tragic destiny? Why did both of our marriages end up as complete dumpster fires?"
It sounded like a philosophical rant, but it felt more like painful soul-searching.
"Lyra, when are you going to go back home?"
Lyra offered a bitter smile. "I don't have the face to."
Back then, she genuinely believed she was marrying for true love, willing to fight the entire world if she had to.
In reality, life had just hit her with a brutal reality check.
She had thrown her family away with her own two hands. Trying to pick up the pieces now wasn't just a matter of bridging the distance; it was about finding the courage to face them.
"I finally understand that saying: if your parents beg you not to marry someone, don't do it. Because in the end, you'll lose absolutely everything."
Down went another glass, and Chloe's eyes were already starting to glaze over.
"Whatever. We haven't seen each other in forever, let's not talk about depressing crap. Tonight, we drink until we black out. Deal?"
Infected by her reckless energy, Lyra grabbed her own drink and threw it back.
Tucked away in the secluded booth, no one paid them any attention.
