I Chose Me Over My Marriage novel Chapter 34

Without waiting for a response, Lyra brushed past her to walk further into the room.

The very second she stepped by, Aria subtly leaned into her shoulder and immediately threw herself sideways toward the floor.

"Ah!"

She shrieked, collapsing dramatically onto the hardwood.

Maxwell, who had been sitting calmly at his desk, shot to his feet in a flash.

He crossed the room in long strides, dropping to one knee to gather Aria into his arms, his voice laced with panic. "Aria, are you okay?"

Aria shook her head weakly, nestling naturally into his warm embrace.

Seeing her so fragile, any lingering frustration Maxwell felt toward her instantly vanished.

He glared up at Lyra, his brow tightly knitted, raw anger burning in his eyes.

"Lyra, what the hell are you doing?!"

His voice cracked like a whip, the volume a clear indicator of his rage.

Faced with this blatant, theatrical frame-up, Lyra's composure only deepened.

"If memory serves, you have security cameras in this office. I'll forgive you for being temporarily blind just now, but you're welcome to pull the footage and see for yourself whether I pushed her, or if she threw herself on the ground."

Pausing, Lyra shifted her gaze back to the crying actress.

"Next time your impulsive little brain gets an idea, try thinking it through. Why would I ever do something so stupid right in front of him?"

Aria's expression flickered with panic, but just as she opened her mouth to deny it, Lyra cut her off.

"You know better than anyone who really started the fire in the banquet hall. I'm not going to bother bringing up the rest. Fool me once, shame on you. Don't push your luck a third time."

To any outsider, the two on the floor looked like deeply devoted lovers.

Lyra mocked herself internally.
