Sienna aggressively shoved him back down. "If you're in pain, just lean back."
A fine sheen of sweat broke out on the man's forehead as he gritted his teeth. "My back... it's injured..."
Sienna froze, her hands instantly letting go.
In her line of sight, his knuckles gripping the center console were white with agony. Realizing what was happening, she frantically scrambled to help Jorrod sit forward again.
"Sorry! I am so sorry..."
As she supported him, Sienna instinctively peered down his collar, trying to get a look underneath his shirt. But his body hadn't been fully dried, and the fabric clung tightly to his skin, concealing everything.
Jumping into a pool couldn't possibly injure his back.
She carefully pulled the seatbelt across his chest. "Was it from my dad?"
Jorrod didn't answer. He just slightly adjusted his posture, leaning sideways against the seat to relieve the pressure.
Sienna didn't ask any more questions. She shut the door, hurried to the driver's seat, cranked up the heat, and drove him to the hospital in absolute silence.
Inside the hospital room.
Throughout the entire examination, the doctor kept sighing at Jorrod. Given his VIP status, the doctor didn't use harsh words, but his tone was laced with heavy disapproval.
"I told you to avoid water, and what do you do? Go for a swim?"
"Can you not feel pain? The water in those decorative pools is filthy. If bacteria get into the dermis, you're looking at a massive, rapid infection."
For once, Jorrod remained silent.
Even if he hadn't been injured, he had never been this reckless in his life.
But in that terrifying split second, the only word echoing in his mind was her name, wiping out every trace of logic or self-preservation.
Sienna didn't know how to swim—that was a detail he had picked up from their chats on The White Phone. The rescue crew was bound to be a step behind, and the water was dirty. The only thing he could do was drag her out as fast as humanly possible so she wouldn't swallow any of that filthy water.
The treatment required him to take his shirt off, so Sienna had no intention of staying in the room.
But just as she turned to leave, Jorrod unlocked his phone and handed it to her. "Keep an eye on my WeChat. Only read the pinned messages."
She looked down, unlocked WeChat, and glanced just long enough to confirm it was a pinned message. She walked over to the bed and held it out for Jorrod to see.
It was just a split-second glance, and Sienna didn't read the contents of the message, but she was hyper-aware of seeing her own WeChat name.
It seemed she was on that pinned list.
"Just read it out loud." That was what Jorrod originally said, but whatever caught his eye made his brows snap together. Excusing himself to the doctor, he took the phone and sat up to handle the issue himself.
It was only then that Sienna finally saw the injury on Jorrod's back.
It was far from "nothing," like the lawyer had claimed.
An angry, blistering red spread downward from his shoulder blades. The broken skin was slick and raw, weeping clear fluid mixed with traces of dirty pool water. Fine streaks of blood seeped through the tissue, looking absolutely horrifying under the bright medical lights.
Seeing that even sitting up forced him to grip the bedsheets in agony, this was clearly far beyond simple pain.
Sienna had no idea what the message was about.
But judging by the deep crease between the man's brows and the heavy darkness swimming in his eyes, it was definitely complicated.
