After handing him the water, Sienna ducked back into her bedroom.
When she re-emerged, she had pulled a thin cardigan over her pajamas.
She walked over to the sofa and looked down at the man lying there with his eyes tightly shut.
He had his head thrown back against the cushions, the long line of his neck exposed, a damp trail of water still glistening near his collarbone.
"Jorrod," Sienna said, shoving her hands into her cardigan pockets. She nudged the toe of his expensive leather shoe with her slipper. "Get up. Call someone to take you to the hospital."
It wasn't a hard kick, but it was enough to rouse him.
Jorrod opened his eyes, his gaze cloudy and slow as he looked up to find her staring down at him.
Their eyes met. In the very next second, his hand shot out, violently gripping her forearm.
Caught completely off guard, Sienna let out a sharp gasp as she was yanked forward. The room spun, and her lower back crashed heavily into the plush backrest of the sofa.
By the time she realized what was happening, their positions were completely reversed.
Jorrod loomed over her for only a second.
Whether from the agonizing pain in his back or the dizzying fever, his strength gave out. Grasping the armrest, the man she usually had to look up to slowly collapsed heavily to the floor at her feet.
He lowered his head, his forehead coming to rest intimately against her knees.
Sienna's hands had flown out of her pockets to brace herself on the sofa cushions during the fall. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. She looked down, watching as the man gently took one of her hands, turned it over, and pressed her palm flat against his own cheek.
The blistering, terrifying heat of his skin instantly seared into her hand.
She couldn't see his face, but she could feel his long eyelashes brushing against her palm, fluttering weakly against her skin.
Sienna sat perfectly still.
A faint, burning moisture began to gather against her palm, just as scorching hot as his skin. She couldn't tell if it was fever sweat or something else entirely.
Not even when he had been in a near-fatal car crash had she seen him look this shattered. Sienna was completely paralyzed with shock.
"Sienna..." Jorrod swallowed hard. "I'm so sorry..."
Sienna said nothing.
"The Memory Lamp... I lost it..."
The thought of that stupid, insignificant piece of plastic felt like a knife twisting in his gut. A boulder was crushing his chest, his throat burning so badly he could barely breathe. And when he finally managed to force the words out, he realized the rock wasn't blocking anything—it was just trying to plug a gaping, hollow wound in his chest where the icy wind was ripping through.
"So this is how it felt for you back then," his voice trembled violently, cracking as he tried to swallow down the sob tearing at his throat. "I don't know how many times I have to say I'm sorry before you stop hating me. But I need you to know... right now, in this exact moment, I feel the exact same agony I put you through. And I am begging you from the bottom of my soul..."
Jorrod couldn't bring himself to say the word 'forgive'.
"You don't ever have to forgive me. I just want to beg you..."
"Just look at me, please? Just give me one chance to make this right. Let me fix this."
The wound on his back must have reopened from the exertion, the blood and serum making his shirt stick uncomfortably to his burning skin. Drowning in the suffocating haze of his fever, he forced himself to articulate every single word perfectly, terrified that if he messed up this one impossible chance, he would lose her forever.
