She couldn't let him in.
"Never," she heard herself say, her voice frigid.
Finn's eyes quivered, his tone steeped in raw panic.
"Why?" He was unraveling. "We loved each other so much. Aside from that one thing, everything was perfect. I still love you. I love you more than I ever have. And I know you still feel it too. Why can't we just start over?"
Sienna curled her fingers into fists, her heart slamming against her ribs.
She stared at him.
His eyes were bloodshot, and a dark shadow of stubble dusted his jaw. He had lost so much weight recently.
She remembered how he used to look in his pilot's uniform—radiant, invincible, and entirely untethered.
Nothing like the man standing before her now.
Finn wanted to start over, but more than anything, she just wanted him to have his old life back.
Not this exhausted, red-eyed ghost who was draining his very soul in a vicious struggle for corporate power.
She recalled what Silas had told her at The Azure Lounge.
"Whether he survives this depends entirely on his next move. If I help him, he makes it through."
Silas had said it so casually, but the implication was absolute: Finn's survival rested entirely in his hands.
She also remembered Ford's boast.
"Silas is on my side."
Ford was still actively courting Silas's support.
If Silas sided with Ford, Finn was doomed.
Finn was walking on a razor's edge. One wrong step, and he would plunge into the abyss.
"Who said I still love you?" The words tumbled from her lips, sharp and laced with frost. "You think far too highly of yourself."
Finn's hand trembled violently.
Sienna raised her left arm, pushing up her sleeve.
She bared the ugly scar, letting the moonlight highlight every jagged edge.
