I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 104

Seraphina instantly bit her lip, acting as if she had let something slip by mistake.

She quickly lowered her head, and when she looked back up, a forced smile was plastered on her face. She shook her head with a strained laugh. "It's nothing. I was just talking nonsense. Pretend you didn't hear anything, Finn."

Finnegan remained unmoved, his expression growing even sterner as he locked his gaze on her face. "Seraphina, there are no secrets between us. Tell me exactly what happened."

Seraphina let out a soft sigh, lowering her lashes as if lost in memory, seemingly torn over whether to speak the truth.

After a few seconds of silence, she finally opened her mouth, feigning a difficult resolve.

"When Cassie and I got into trouble, Nora was the first one on the scene. That means she was already nearby. She knew we were there the whole time."

Seraphina paused, shooting a quick, calculated glance at Finnegan before continuing. "As Cassie's own mother, she knows how to pitch a tent, yet she completely ignored us. That's why we ended up in such a dangerous situation."

As she spoke, her eyes welled up with tears, and her voice began to tremble. "It doesn't matter what happens to me. I can handle getting a little hurt. But Cassie is so young, and she's her biological daughter. How could she just stand by and watch Cassie get hurt?"

By the time she finished, Seraphina was sobbing uncontrollably, playing the picture of absolute devastation.

Finnegan's expression turned terrifyingly dark, a storm brewing in his eyes.

He reached out and pulled Seraphina into his arms, letting her rest her head against his shoulder while he gently patted her back. "Seraphina, I'll handle this. Just rest and eat your soup."

He stood up, ready to storm out of the room.

Seraphina quickly grabbed his wrist, tilting her tear-streaked face up to look at him. "Finn, please don't do anything rash."

She bit her lower lip. "Honestly, it's fine that Nora didn't help us. Maybe she's just bitter about losing you. Seeing Cassie and me getting along so well probably upset her, so she had a moment of weakness. It's understandable."

She had no idea what lies Finnegan had been fed this time, but she was all too familiar with his twisted logic.

He would label her actions first, then find a self-righteous excuse to condemn her. The charge would undoubtedly be negligence or jealousy—jealousy over Seraphina, the supposed paragon of perfection.

Her phone screen lit up with a work message from the institute. She glanced down at it before turning her attention back to the window.

Cassie was sick, and checking on her was a duty Nora intended to fulfill, regardless of Finnegan's distorted opinions.

She just hoped that this time, she wouldn't walk into another interrogation.

Deep down, of course, she knew that was wishful thinking.
