I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 124

Finnegan, however, had noticed her. The moment he saw Nora turn her head away, a subtle smirk instinctively tugged at the corner of his mouth, and a rush of deep satisfaction filled him.

Seeing him and Seraphina looking so intimately entwined had clearly reminded her of their past, which was why she couldn't bear to look. It proved she wasn't completely over him, which explained why she had been so reluctant to remarry.

Noticing his distraction, Seraphina followed his line of sight and caught the back of Nora's retreating figure.

Her expression darkened ever so slightly as she called out, "Finn?"

Finnegan's attention snapped back. He looked down at her. "Seraphina? What's wrong?"

There was a trace of displeasure in her voice. "You were distracted just now. Who were you looking at? Nora?"

Finnegan denied it instantly, his expression so calm it was entirely flawless. "No. I was just debating whether or not I should go say hello to Director Vance."

Seraphina stared at him for two seconds before the gentle smile reappeared on her face. "Don't you have things to handle at the company?" she said considerately. "You should go. I've got things covered here."

Finnegan leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead, his tone tender. "Thanks for your hard work, Seraphina."

A sweet blush spread across her cheeks. "It's no trouble at all," she whispered softly. Taking her bag from his hands, she turned and walked into the office.

Finnegan straightened up, his eyes drifting involuntarily back toward Nora's cubicle. She was already seated, her head bowed as she flipped through a stack of documents, completely ignoring his existence from start to finish.

He frowned, eventually pulling his gaze away before turning on his heel and striding out of the institute.

Seraphina shot a glance in Nora's direction and walked straight over to her cubicle.

Nora was head down, analyzing the experimental data in front of her. She caught sight of a shadow out of the corner of her eye but didn't bother looking up.

The Fletcher family held this mandatory dinner once a year, gathering all the extended relatives. In the past, she had attended every single one because she desperately needed to secure her place.

Back then, she still hadn't let go of Finnegan. She had convinced herself that she was part of the Fletcher family, believing that as long as her name was on that roster, she and Finnegan still shared a connection.

Looking back, they had been over for a very long time. She had simply been clinging to a pathetic fantasy.

Now that she had decided to move forward, she no longer wanted any part of the Fletcher family's events.

The outside world didn't yet know of her plans to remarry. The Fletchers were probably expecting her to show up on time and take her seat at that massive round table, raise her glass, spew whatever pleasantries they wanted to hear, and then serve as their evening gossip material.

Nora's eyes grew cold. She would attend tonight, but only to make everything crystal clear.
