He lost control of his temper, his voice unconsciously rising several octaves. "I really don't! How many times do I have to say it before you believe me?!"
Seraphina's hands froze instantly.
She hovered there, her fingers still coated in white ointment, staring at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her lips trembled as tears silently streamed down her face. Her voice cracked with shock.
"Finn... you're yelling at me? You're actually yelling at me because of Nora? Are you even the man I thought I knew?"
She stumbled back two steps, dropping the cap of the ointment, which rolled across the floor. Her face was etched with absolute betrayal, and the tears flowed even harder than before.
"I get it. I'm just in the way. Fine, I'll go. If I'm not around, I won't annoy you anymore."
She spun around and headed for the door. Ignoring his agonizing wounds, Finnegan bolted out of bed, caught up to her in two strides, and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
The sudden movement was too violent. Several of the scabbing lashes split wide open simultaneously, fresh blood instantly soaking through his bandages.
He groaned in pain, his face turning deathly pale as sweat broke out on his forehead, but he only tightened his grip. "Seraphina, don't go."
Seraphina hadn't expected him to go that far. She gasped in shock and immediately turned around to support his weight.
Seeing the fresh blood seeping through his shirt, she cried even harder, practically dragging him back to the bed. "I won't go! Why did you get out of bed? You're badly hurt, what if your wounds get infected!"
She helped him lie face down again. He was sweating profusely from the pain, but he still managed to turn his head and give her a faint smile.
"You still care about me. I got up because I was terrified you'd leave, terrified I'd break your heart."
He reached out and grabbed her wrist, his thumb gently stroking her skin. His voice was weak from the agony. "Seraphina, listen to me. If I didn't love you, why would I have stolen my brother's identity just to start a new life? Isn't that proof enough?"
Hearing this, the heavy knot of anxiety that had been suffocating Seraphina all night finally began to dissolve.
He had literally torn his own wounds open just to stop her from leaving. If a man was willing to go to such extremes for her, what reason did she have to doubt him?
Smiling fondly, she leaned closer to his face and murmured softly, "What are you mumbling about?"
He had just whispered something under his breath, but she couldn't quite catch it. She leaned in further, her ear almost brushing against his lips.
Finnegan's lips parted slightly.
The next second, the smile on Seraphina's face vanished, and her entire body went rigid.
She froze perfectly still, her blood instantly running ice-cold from her head all the way down to her toes.
He was calling Nora's name.
