I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 217

Upon returning to the Fletcher estate, Finnegan swapped his shoes and walked straight into the study, not even bothering to take off his jacket.

The scenes from The Willow Academy Spring Fair played on a loop in his mind. How had Nora changed so drastically?

The woman who used to curl up in his arms with teary eyes had vanished, replaced by someone who couldn't even stand the sight of him. It was like looking at two completely different people.

What drove him craziest was the implication behind her words. She hadn't explicitly confirmed she was remarrying, but it genuinely seemed like she had moved on from him.

Impossible. They had been through hell and back together. How could she just drop it all so easily? If she could let go, she would have done it five years ago. Why wait until now?

Seraphina walked out of the kitchen carrying a glass of hot water. When she didn't see Finnegan in the living room, she headed for the study.

Pushing the door open, she found him slouched in his chair, staring blankly at the bookshelf across the room. He was so lost in thought that he didn't even notice her walk in.

Holding the glass, Seraphina approached him and called out softly, "Finn, have some water."

Finnegan was still spiraling over Nora. When Seraphina's voice suddenly cut through his thoughts, his unchecked frustration caused him to impulsively throw his arm out.

His elbow slammed directly into the glass before Seraphina had a secure grip on it. The glass knocked out of her fingers, sending scalding hot water splashing directly onto the back of her right hand and forearm.

Seraphina let out a piercing shriek as the glass shattered onto the hardwood floor, sending water everywhere with a loud crash.

Finnegan bolted out of his chair. He spun around to see Seraphina clutching her hand, her face completely drained of color from the pain.

Panic immediately overriding his annoyance, he grabbed a box of tissues from the desk and pressed them against her arm, soaking up the dripping water. "Seraphina! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to. Are you okay? I'm taking you to the hospital right now!"

Reclaim his identity and get back together with Nora.

The accusation pierced him, triggering a dangerous thought. If that day ever came, would Nora actually come back to him? She definitely would.

Seeing him visibly hesitate over the question, Seraphina's tears broke like a dam. Her voice grew so shrill it cracked. "Finnegan! You really are plotting how to get back with her, aren't you?!"

Yanked back to reality by her screaming, Finnegan pinched the bridge of his nose, aggressively shoving those messy thoughts aside. When he spoke again, he forced his tone back into its usual, exasperated gentleness.

"How could I possibly be thinking that? Is that really the kind of man you think I am? Enough. Stop talking, we're going to the hospital."

Seeing him revert to the anxious, accommodating Finnegan she knew, her emotions leveled out slightly. She leaned back against the seat, quietly sobbing, and said nothing more.
