If it were the past, Finnegan would have already pulled her into his arms for a passionate kiss.
He had zero resistance to her seductive charm.
But this time, Finnegan's brow slowly furrowed. He looked up at her, his gaze making her incredibly uncomfortable. "Seraphina, back up a little. Don't sit on my files."
Seraphina jolted off the desk as if she had been electrocuted, the alluring smile freezing on her lips. She stood rooted to the spot, stunned for a couple of seconds before she could process it.
Finnegan had truly changed; he no longer blindly favored and spoiled her like he used to.
In the past, whenever she sat on his desk to flirt, he would just laugh and pull her into his lap. Now, his only concern was whether she would wrinkle the documents Nora had brought him?
Her eyes reddened slightly, her voice trembling as grievance and anger twisted together. "Are you looking down on my abilities, or do you have ulterior motives?"
Finnegan finally looked up completely, his brow furrowed in exasperation. "What are you trying to say now?"
Seraphina bit her lip. "Why does it have to be Nora? You've seen what I can do. If I run this Phase II trial, the data will be more intuitive and the progress will be faster. Don't you trust me?"
Finnegan pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a sigh.
He tried to keep his voice as gentle as possible. "It's not about whether I trust you or not. The board of directors has already decided on the candidate. How am I supposed to fight all of them alone?"
Seeing her like this, the thread of impatience that had been pulled tight inside Finnegan for days suddenly snapped.
He set down his documents, quickly walked over to sit beside her, and pulled her into his arms. He patted her back soothingly, his heart softening.
"Don't cry, darling. It breaks my heart to see you cry. How could I ever forget? I never forget my promises to you. I've just been too busy these past few days, and my mood has been terrible. I'm sorry."
Seraphina buried her face in his chest, crying for a long time before slowly looking up at him.
Her voice carried a fragile, broken quality. "Finn, don't ever forget... I was the one who saved your life."
