Because of the agonizing cramps, a fine sheen of cold sweat had broken out across her forehead, and all the color had drained from her lips.
She hunched over, forcing herself to take one agonizing step after another. She let out a shaky sigh, realizing tonight was going to be an absolute nightmare to survive.
Just then, a firm hand gently supported her arm. Nora turned her head and met Xander's deep, dark gaze.
She froze, her voice trembling and weak. "What... are you..."
Before Nora could finish her sentence, Xander leaned down and scooped her up into his arms.
Nora gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
Xander looked down at her. He wasn't in his usual sharp suit, but rather a simple set of loungewear. A few stray strands of hair fell softly across his forehead, giving him a distinctly relaxed and intimate aura.
But the crippling pain radiating from her abdomen rendered Nora completely speechless. She could only lean into the man's chest and squeeze her eyes shut.
Xander carried her to the sofa and gently set her down.
Nora frowned. Great, he probably had no idea what was wrong with her. He was a man, after all; there was no way he could understand this kind of pain.
She tried to push herself up, but Xander pressed her back down. "Don't move. Lie down."
Nora was stunned as she watched Xander stand up, walk into the kitchen, pour a glass of hot water, and slowly make his way back.
He set the glass on the coffee table. "Let it cool for a minute before you drink it."
Nora pressed her lips together and leaned back against the cushions. She looked at him hesitantly, unsure if she should speak up. Would he think she was just being dramatic?
But every woman dealt with these physiological pains, and it wasn't like she asked for it.
Just then, Xander turned around and walked away.
Nora's heart sank, and she lowered her eyes.
Of course. He was probably just going back to his room. Getting her a glass of water was already a kind gesture; she shouldn't expect anything more.
