Hearing this, Finnegan grabbed her throat, his fingers tightening like a vise.
Seraphina's laughter came to an abrupt halt; the sudden pain in her neck made her gasp, but the frantic look in her eyes didn't fade in the slightest.
"What did you say?" Finnegan’s voice was dangerously low, squeezed from the depths of his throat, each word blanketing the office in a suffocating tension.
Seraphina tilted her head back, letting him choke her, her eyes filled with a reckless, self-destructive madness as she rasped, "I said, Nora stopped loving you a long time ago. She’s going to marry someone else soon. Did you really think she'd just stand around waiting for you? Finnegan, you think way too highly of yourself."
Finnegan shoved her away violently. Seraphina stumbled and crashed into the edge of the desk, her forehead throbbing in pain. Yet, acting as if she felt nothing, she braced her hands against the surface and forced herself to stand.
She glared at him with a cold smirk. "You think I'm talking nonsense?!"
"You really don't know, do you, Finnegan? Nora doesn't love you anymore! She figured out your real identity ages ago. Did you honestly believe your proud little masquerade could fool her?"
Finnegan reeled back in shock, absolute disbelief written all over his face. "That's impossible. I hid it perfectly. There's no way Nora could know. You're lying to me, aren't you?"
Seraphina rubbed her throat, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "What's so impossible about it? Even if she didn't know who you really were, you've been dead for five years. You ceased to exist biologically for five whole years. Did you expect her to play the grieving widow forever? Finnegan, what makes you think she would wait for a dead man?"
Those words were like a dagger, slicing precisely into the most vulnerable part of Finnegan's heart.
It was true. He had faked his death for five years, taken on a new identity, and lived by Seraphina's side as his brother, Frederick. Meanwhile, Nora had sobbed over his supposed corpse until she passed out. She had given birth to Cassie alone, raised their child by herself, and weathered every storm on her own.
