I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 441

After leaving The Newman Estate, Nora remained silent. She sat in the passenger seat, clutching the worn wooden box to her chest, her fingers absently tracing the intricate carvings.

Xander stayed quietly by her side, not wanting to intrude. He stole occasional glances at her, relieved to see she was holding up reasonably well.

As the car drove out of the city limits, Nora finally spoke softly, "I want to visit Mom and Nicholas."

Xander's heart gave a slight tug. "Okay," he said, his voice raspy.

They drove toward the cemetery, nestled halfway up a quiet hill where few people ever disturbed the peace. Nora led the way with the box in her arms. Xander trailed a short distance behind, maintaining the perfect gap—close enough for her to see him if she looked back, but far enough to give her privacy.

Margaret and Nicholas's headstones sat side by side in the most tranquil corner of the cemetery. Nora had once engraved a simple line on her mother's stone, which her father had later removed. Yet, somehow, that small inscription had reappeared on the edge of the granite.

A lump formed in Nora's throat. She set the box aside and slowly lowered herself to sit by the grave.

The photo on Margaret's headstone was cropped from an old family portrait, while Nicholas's was taken the year he graduated. He shared Nora's features, right down to the faint dimple that appeared when he smiled.

Nora reached out to trace the cold stone, the chilling sensation seeping straight to her core. She let out a deep breath, her eyes instantly brimming with tears.
