I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 444

Hearing this, a cautious spark of hope lit up Cassie's eyes, though she still kept a respectful distance from the camera.

Nora made sure to give her some extra attention. "Were you a good girl today, Cassie?"

Cassie looked genuinely flattered by the question and nodded vigorously. "Yeah! I was super good! I helped Grandma clean up!"

Nora smiled warmly. "I knew my Cassie was the best."

Cassie beamed as if she had just been handed the world's best candy. Bonnie immediately chimed in, grinning from ear to ear. "I was good too! I helped pour the drinks!"

Nora made sure to shower her with equal praise. "Of course. Our Bonnie is always perfect."

After a few more sweet exchanges, Bonnie finally ended the call.

Shaking his head, Xander put his phone on silent. "This time is just for us. I don't want any more interruptions."

Nora teased him with a laugh. "I didn't realize the great Xander Harrison could be so petty."

Xander leaned over and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "When it comes to you, I'm incredibly selfish."

Nora chuckled, the atmosphere light and full of warmth. After they finished their meal, Xander drove her back to The Vance Institute of Medical Science.

"Call me when you're off the clock. I'll pick you up, and we'll go get Cassie and Bonnie together," he said.

Nora nodded with a smile, grabbing her bag and heading into the institute.

She spent the next two hours buried in lab work. Just as she was about to head out for the day, she realized she had left some crucial raw data files at her bench. Deciding to take a shortcut, she slipped into a narrow, rarely used alleyway.
