I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 452

Staring at his face, Nora suddenly felt the ambient noise in the teahouse fade into a dull roar. The only thing she could hear was the frantic, deafening thud of her own heart, hammering against her ribs as if trying to break free.

"So what you're saying is that you have the proof, but you have no intention of just handing it over. You want me to trade myself for it? If I team up with you, I get the evidence, but what happens if I refuse?"

Frederick gave a dry chuckle. "If you refuse, then the truth will rot in the ground along with my vengeance. Nora, Finnegan is our mutual enemy. Think about your mother and your brother. Don't you want to get justice for them?"

Nora closed her eyes and let out a long, shaky exhale, unable to steady her trembling breaths.

"You're a smart woman, Nora, and I never beat around the bush with intelligent people. You need the evidence, and I need you. We both get what we want. It's perfectly fair."

Taking another deep breath, Nora slowly rose to her feet. As she opened her eyes, a resolute fire seemed to have replaced her devastation.

"I'm sorry, but if I'm going to get revenge, I'll do it my way. I won't get into bed with you, and I certainly won't be a pawn in your vendetta. I will track down the proof myself. If you managed to find it, someone else out there knows about it, too. Even if you destroy your copies, the truth will inevitably come to light one day."

Frederick froze, his brows knitting together in sharp displeasure. "What is that supposed to mean? You're turning me down? Even after I've laid all my cards on the table, you're still going to protect Finnegan?"

"I'm not protecting anyone," Nora replied, shaking her head. "I despise Finnegan just as much as you do. But until you hand over concrete proof, I won't blindly believe a word you say. It's glaringly obvious that you're just using this tragedy as leverage to manipulate me."

Grabbing her purse, Nora spun on her heel and marched out. Frederick watched her retreating figure with a faint, amused smirk.

She truly was the woman Finnegan obsessed over—stubborn to the absolute core.

Back when she lived with the Fletcher family, he had never realized she possessed such a fiery temper.
