Seraphina Shaw hid in the shadows of the fire stairwell. Her hat and medical mask obscured most of her face, leaving only her bloodshot eyes visible.

She stared down the hall where Finnegan had just been wheeled in. She watched the man she had loved for years destroy himself, pushing his body to the brink of a dangerous fever—all for another woman.

Her hands balled into tight fists, a suffocating wave of despair washing over her.

Even in his sleep, Finnegan's lips moved slightly, murmuring a faint name. Seraphina didn't even need to hear it to know who it was.
